Obituary

Gordon John O’Neil, age 64 of Carleton, MI, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2022, with his loving family by his side.

Gordon was born August 28, 1958 in Detroit. He enlisted in the United States Army at age 17 and served for three years. Following his time in the service, he met his wife of almost 39 years, Laurie, at the Detroit Free Press, where they were both employed at the time. They would go on to marry in 1983, and raise four beloved children.

Gordon was a man of integrity – he held many different jobs over his 64 years, and took great pride in all of them. Following his time at the Free Press, he worked for the Toledo Blade newspaper and owned and operated a logistics company. His most recent employment was at Roush Industries, as a Material Control Supervisor. In October 2022, he celebrated his 25th anniversary with the organization.

During his tenure at Roush, Gordon worked for several different areas, including Roush Engine Build/Machine Shop, Roush Performance Products, CleanTech, Roush Entertainment Systems, and Roush Advanced Composites. He dedicated much of his life to his work with the company, and was respected and loved by many of his colleagues.

Gordon was known for his sense of humor and for being the life of any party. In his later years, what he enjoyed doing most was spending time with his family and his beloved dog, Maya, at his cabin up north in Lakes of the North (Mancelona, MI). Gordon, Laurie, and his mom, Virginia, spent most of their weekends at the cabin, and made some wonderful memories during that time. Up north, Gordon enjoyed riding his side-by-side, fishing, going for walks on his property, and hanging out with their friends. His up north home quickly became his most favorite place to spend his days.

Gordon loved his family dearly, and will forever be remembered as a loving husband, dad, grandpa, son, and friend.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Laurie O’Neil; his four children: Kelly (Shawn) Jedinak, Shannon (Ryan Spurlock) O’Neil, Shawn (Gregory) Block, and Patrick (Kelsey) O'Neil; his mother, Virginia Maruszewski; his 9 grandchildren: Ethan (Amy), Jayda, Michael, Henry, August, Charlie, Gabriel, Silas, and Olivia; and his great-granddaughter, Violet. He was preceded in death by his fathers, Tracy O’Neil and Gerald Maruszewski.

A visitation will be held Sunday, November 20, 2022, for the public, from 2-8pm at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 7pm.
