Obituary

DUBKE, Eric J., age 55, of Gibraltar, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on March 16, 2020. He was the beloved husband of 22 years to Julie Dubke. Dearest son of Mary and the late Marlin Dubke. Loving father of Jeffrey (Theresa) Duncil Jr., Jesse Duncil, Jacob (Alycia Bobowski) Duncil and Erica Dubke. He is also survived by his sister Michelle (Robert Ruokolainen) Voineag and his brother John Dubke. Eric graduated from the University of Michigan with a Masters Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Science of Engineering and Electronics. His love for the Michigan Wolverines was never hindered. He stood behind his alma mater through good and bad. Eric was lifelong employee of DTE Energy. He served 35 years with the company and was very proud to say so. He was also an avid hunter and loved the outdoors. His love for tradition always brought him on his yearly trips to the Upper Peninsula, which was started by his father. He had much respect and love for the people he met throughout Northern Michigan. He had another lifelong passion for hockey, for which he played goalie for 32 years. He loved boating, traveling, and later in life a passion for camping. He very much enjoyed bringing the family together in different parts of the state or country to share laughs and make memories. Eric was the definition of Selfless, and always put others before himself. He will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

Condolences:

I am so sorry to learn of Eric's passing. We worked together at the beginning of Eric's DTE career when he started at WSC and again at the end of my career on a storm assignment in SW Detroit. We patrolled every street and alley along Springwells on a West End circuit searching for trouble. I'm grateful for that day we spent working together. Eric was hardworking, thorough, knowledgeable, easygoing and a credit to all those around him. He was a good guy and will be missed. Kevin Dolin

My deepest sympathies to Eric's family. I got to know Eric while calling on DTE as a sales representative in 1994, and always enjoyed working with him. I especially enjoyed our many lunches and after hours visits where Eric loved to add people to my invitations for these events as he loved to gather people and joke and laugh. He will truly be missed by all who were blessed to know him. Keith Ward Keith Ward

Eric was a great man and it was a pleasure to know him. He raised a great family and will be missed by many, but will NEVER be forgotten. Rick & Gay Bobowski

Hi dad, I love you more big dawg! I’ll never stop making you proud! Erica Micale Dubke

I can not begin to tell you how much Eric was a part of my life. He was Ron's or Ronbo best friend, my brother from another mother, we all grew up together and I basically grew up in ice rinks watching Eric and my brother play hockey over the years. Julie I am so very sorry you and your family are going through this right now and I wish there was a way I could make things better for you. Eric was a person who was always willing to help anyone out and especially anyone in my family. He was an awesome goalie, son, brother, father. Hard to believe that he is gone and also that Ron is gone. I know that they are up in heaven playing hockey like they use to in the old days. I wish I could be there with you but due to certain other obligations I will not be able to make it. Just know you all are in my thoughts and prayers and no matter what I am here for all of you. I love you all and RIP my brother you will be so missed more then you will ever know. All my love and Prayers to the whole Dubke family, Cheryl and Michael Regan Cheryl A Regan

I worked with Eric at DTE a long time ago at Warren Service Center. Our Dad's also worked together at BASF. Eric was always an inspiration to me when I started out as a coop fresh out of school. He inspired me to work hard and to be physically active. He always made me laugh and always lightened the mood at work. I recently spoke to him about my son who will be graduating soon. Even after all these years he was willing to help me with questions. May you find peace knowing that he made the world a better place and now he is watching over you always! Sincerely, Sue Powell Sue Powell

It is so difficult for me to find the words to express the shock and sadness I feel. Celebrating 55 birthdays together is not enough. You will be missed by so many. Love you, My Brother, My Friend. Michelle

It was thoughtful of the family to post all the pictures of Eric and his family recently on Facebook. Although I've only known Eric for the past 11 years as one of the salesmen that called on him at DTE he and I developed a friendship that was of great value to me, and I will miss him. We could tell each other hunting stories for hours, and never mention the same one twice. Thoughts and prayers to his loved ones. Jarid Baumgartner

My Memories of Eric are many, from working for DTE, being my golf partner on Saturday mornings for many years, working with him to run the Monday golf league, snowmobiling around Houghton and Higgins Lakes as well as UP trips. I remember having his bachelor party at my house the same day the Red Wings won the cup in 1997 and standing up in Julie and Eric’s wedding. Hanging at the Limberlost and other fine establishments up north. Eric was someone who you could always depend on, he always took care of business. I’m really going to miss my dear friend. I hope we can all get together at a later date to celebrate Eric’s life. I'm thinking of Julie, Michelle and the rest of the family at this time and praying that they find the strength to deal with this tragedy. Ron Alstead

Eric and I worked together at the beginning, and end of our careers at the WSC facility of DTE Energy. We started as young engineers and through the years, advanced to the Supervisor position. We played baseball and bowled in the Edison leagues together, always enjoying good times and having a great relationship. He will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends. Gregory Scruggs

Wish I could’ve met Eric. He sounded like an amazing man. Thoughts and prayers to all of you, I’m sure he’s rockin’ it up with God Audrey Stachler

Eric is a long time friend who I have had the honor of knowing and sharing many great memories with. I haven't seen him much in the last few years, however, the memories I have will be with me forever. We golfed on many occasions, visited him and the family and his cottage on Houghton Lake, and snowmobiled in many areas of Michigan. We made it through the flu season after snowmobiling in the UP with Eric and Julie where we all ended up sick and the scariest of times when Eric and Julie went through the ice on the lake and we had to race the two of them back to the cottage. We met and enjoyed the company of many or Eric's family, including his mom, sweet brother John, sister Michelle and Julie's sons when they were young. I have not met Erica, yet I know he is with her always. Life can certainly bring us unfortunate situations that we will never understand, but we struggle through and learn to continue in our lives. This is because of those people around us like Eric. He shared his friendship, love, laughter and now memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to all family members, friends and co-workers. Eric will be missed by all. Deb Alstead

We send our deepest condolences. We loved your dad and have many fond memories of hunting, fishing and doing home improvement projects with him. We must have roofed 4-5 houses including the hunting cabin. So much fun! He was a great friend and even though our paths took different directions the last few years we thought of him often. Ralph and Janis Suchyta

Aunt Julie, Erica, Jeff, & Mr. Frenchy (Jacob), My heart breaks for you all at this time! Eric has left us way too soon. He was always smiling, always kind, and I cant remember a time where Eric wasn't enjoyable to be around! He has qualities that I hope more men, young and old, would aspire to be. He was loving and he was kind. I know he is going to be greatly missed by so many. We are actively praying for you all, praying for the comfort of the Holy Spirit to surround you all! XO XO XO I love you all! Angie & Michael Szabo Angela Szabo

I met Eric through Carlson band and the football games. Looked forward to his big booming "GO CARLSON" at half times. My daughter Haylee and Erica played on the golf team and were in the band together. He had a special glow about him and I liked talking with him. May the big guy rest in peace. I shout "GO IN PEACE ERIC" and salute you. Greg Konczal

There are so many employees & service centers at DTE so Eric and I never met. But I am a Wolverines fan to the end so we would have gotten along Alita Rucker

So sorry to learn of our cousin's sudden passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Michelle...as well as with Eric's wife and children. May God wrap his loving arms around you at this time, and in the days ahead. Debra Zilka, Don Zilka and Family

To the entire Dubke Family, I give my condolences and prayer. Eric was a wonderful person, work colleague and friend. I will truly miss him. Eric and I first met while working in the Engineering Standards Group at Detroit Edison back in the 1990s. Eric was a young Engineer who previously worked in the company’s High Voltage Lab. I remember a time when our entire Department went to the Edison Boat Club for a group Team Building meeting. Eric brought a bucket of golf balls and his brand new golf driver. Before we knew it, Eric was lined up on the river front and began whacking his bucket of golf balls into the Detroit River. We were amazed on the power of his golf swing; Eric was driving the balls a good 200 to 250 yards on every swing. Eric had one powerful golf swing. Eric often talked about his family, especially about the fun he had going “up north” (I think it was a little cottage on Houghton Lake). Eric frequently talked about his fun times with family (it was important to him). I was amazed how Eric dedicated his time to family, especially to his brother John. I remember frequently meeting Eric and John during their bowling league days at Belmar II Lanes in Trenton. We always shared a few beers and talked about work, life and family (and fishing). In recent years, Eric occasionally called me to help his Work Group with setting up work computer applications to track cable failures. Eric was always calm and humble whenever we talked. Eric never lost his cool. I really admired how Eric kept a calm tone even during chaotic work stress. Good bye good friend. My prayers are with your family. Mark Stockman

The term Gentle Giant comes to mind when I reflect on my relationship with Eric. Never worked side by side with him but always thought it would be electrifying and edifying! Eric was always glad to see me and I him. Always had a smile even when in pain. I noticed someone else said how proud he was to have worked for DTE, I too feel and felt that way. I believe that’s what the company was all about, the wonderful people who were employed there. You will be deeply missed here on earth but I believe that Saint Peter is in need of a great goalie. Love ya man! John Ruedger

RIP Eric, you were a real joy to work with, loved how you called me your work Mom. Wish I could be there to say goodbye but I live 200 miles away in northern Michigan. Hugs to the Dubke family. Sue Valent

My heart breaks for all of you. Eric was a genuine, great man and father, with a huge heart. Who loved his family unconditionally. Please know, you are all in my heart. I can not attend his funeral, but please know I'm here for you. You are all in my thoughts and prayers....xoxo Love you all. Theresa sims

I only met Eric twice while dropping items for his co-workers charity. He was so pleasant and happy to pass the items on to Loving arms for Liberia. The couple times we met made a lasting impression of what a wonderful man he was. He will truly be missed and I send my deepest condolences to the family. Dawn Hawley

I am so sorry for your loss of this great man. I worked for Eric as a cable test technician at DTE and can say with honesty he was the best boss i ever had. He was truly a kind person with a funny personality and will be greatly missed. I know how close he was to all of his family and this has to be very hard for you. My deepest sympathies go out to you in this terrible time. And this is for you Bossman GO BLUE!!! Sean Ross

I met Eric a long time ago about the time he hired in with DTE. I never worked directly with him but over the years we talked a little whenever we crossed paths. More recently we saw each other at the Monday golf league that he helped to manage. He was always a great person to be around and will surely be missed by all who knew him. Steve Campbell

I am very sorry to hear about Eric's passing. I always enjoyed seeing his smiling face. I worked and played sporting activates with him for many years. We worked at DTE together, played softball, and for several years he was a leader in our golf leagues and outings. I remember when my Son Matt was on the high school baseball team, Eric played in our foursome at the golf outing fund raiser. As I remember, he won the longest drive. He could hit that five iron of his farther than anyone I ever played golf with. I enjoyed Eric's fellowship very much. My prayers and sympathy go out to his family and other friends. He will be dearly missed. Randy Church

Julie and Family, We are so very sorry for the loss of Eric. We have been family friends since we were little and Eric was always so kind and fun. Although lives with our own families didn’t give us much time To see each other we are thankful we were able to see you both last June. We are keeping you all in prayer now and the days to come. Love, Terrie and Jim Derupa, Dan Kusak, and Debbie and Tony Donia The Kusak Family

I knew Eric from the EAA and always bumping into him at the gym during our earlier years at Detroit Edison. I was always impressed on how strong he was and his physical presence, but yet he was one of the kindest and gentlest men I knew. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make his annual Harry Buhl award speech at our golf league banquet. Eric was such a good natured and even keeled person and was loved by everyone. Eric’s passing leaves behind a large hole in the lives of his family and friends. He will be missed dearly. Gregory Lechkun
