Driver charged with DUI after colliding with flagpole at Vermont veterans memorial cemetery - Newport Dispatch

RANDOLPH - A Barre man was charged with DUI after crashing his vehicle into a flagpole at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery Monday night.

Vermont State Police arrived on scene around 7 p.m. May 27 after receiving a report of a single-vehicle accident at a cemetery located on Fourneys Road.

Upon arrival, police identified the driver as 35-year-old John Kunkle of Barre.

Kunkle showed signs of intoxication and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The accident resulted in significant damage to the flag pole at the entrance to the cemetery.

Members of the Randolph Center Fire Department were dispatched to the scene and safely removed the damaged pole.

The defendant sustained injuries during the collision and was taken to Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.

He was later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire for further treatment.

His condition was considered stable.
