"Dead by Daylight" voice actor Zoe Alexandria has died at the age of 29

Voice actor Zoe Alexandria, a transgender woman best known for her role as Unknown in the horror video game Dead By Daylight, died April 30 due to complications from a rare autoimmune disease. She was 29 years old.

Alexandria's death was confirmed by Dead By Daylight 's official X account, formerly Twitter, earlier this week. "Like many others in our community, we are deeply saddened to learn that The Unknown's voice actress, Zoe Alexandria, has passed away", wrote representatives from game studio Behaviour Interactive. "We welcomed her into our world, and her talent shone brightly in her performance. Our thoughts are with her loved ones during this difficult time".

Late last month, Alexandria wrote on her YouTube channel that she had previously been diagnosed with two autoimmune diseases - non-paraneoplastic limbic autoimmune encephalitis and stiff man syndrome. Alexandria explained in the post that she made the decision to stop treatment back in February due to "horrible" side effects that offered only a "temporary solution" and not a cure.

"I am very very very very very very very very very sick, the situation is progressing rapidly", Alexandria wrote, explaining that she suffers from more than a dozen seizures a day and even more bouts of rigidity. "The main thing I've learned is that life is too precious to dwell on anything other than those you love and those who love you", she told her fans. "Love is and always has been the answer".

Alexandria gained notoriety as a voice actor after her role in the game Dead by Daylight as "The Unknown", a monster that "dresses" its victims after it kills them. However, after the game's release, the "Unknown" became controversial due to a game skin that depicted the deformed monster in a cheerleader outfit - a design that some trans players believe is a transmisogynistic stereotype. In a series of deleted social media posts, Alexandria said Behaviour's developers did not inform her of the character's design in advance, but rejected claims that the developers were transphobic, saying the company had been "nothing but kind and supportive" while she was subjected to "massive bullying for my involvement in the character's creation".

In addition to her acting career, Alexandria was also a vocal coach and specialized in giving voice to other trans women. She was also a singer and musician and released two singles on her YouTube channel, "My Reality" and "Legacy". A third single titled "Dis-ease" was partially completed at the time of her death.

Fans rushed to social media to mourn Alexandria's death this week, posting tributes, well wishes and fan art. On her YouTube post, fans expressed gratitude for Alexandria's work and mentorship, saying it helped them deal with their own vocal dysphoria.

"Rest in peace Zoey", one commenter wrote. "I owe you my voice".
