Susan Buckner, the iconic "Grease" actress, has died at the age of 72

Susan Buckner, best known for her role as cheerleader Patti Simcox in the 1978 film Grease, died May 2.

She was 72 years old. Her death was confirmed by her publicist, NBC News reported.

Buckner was 25 years old when she landed the role of Simcox, joining John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the hit movie musical. Buckner's most famous line as Simcox with a ponytail was, "Do the splits, holler! Show some spirit for old man Rydell! Way to go, red and white! Go Rydell, fight, fight, fight, fight!".

She has also starred in such series as "The Love Boat", "B.J. and the Bear", and "The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries".

Buckner starred in the 1981 horror film Deadly Blessings and the 1989 film Police Academy 6: City Under Siege. She starred in the 1980 television series When the Whistle Blows.

According to CNN, Buckner later left Hollywood to focus on raising her two children. She was also a theater teacher for young children and taught dance in Florida for nearly a decade.
