  • So late with this entry, but as distances grow while we go our different ways, I just today, August 27, 2019, heard about Glenn's passing from a long neglected mutual musical acquaintance. Glenn and I worked from time to time in partnership on different sides of the collaboration needed to do musical theatre, he in the pit with the musicians and me on the stage with the actors. It was always a joy. One time, we got to act against each other with him as El Gallo and me as the Old Actor in a production of "The Fantasticks" - even more fun. While Glenn was not so attuned to the weirdness of selecting and positioning actors on stage and me ever so much less so about the nuances of music and the recruiting of capable musicians for a show, I always found our infrequent meetups in later years to be of illuminating insight on the business of being a journeyman musician and an independent contractor and ultimately a teacher. It is so heartening to read the other tributes here from his students to know he had such greater impact on those in his own world of music beyond the huge, fulfilling talent he brought in for me and the stage productions on which we collaborated. The stories he had about his own work in the pits and the union, his staying at our house one winter while we vacationed, happy to have the use of a reliable car with a trunk big enough for his horns - despite the fact it had an unfamiliar manual transmission, which he mastered perhaps as quickly as he did his tuba - oh, what good work and great memories. Thank you, Glenn. Craig Reynolds
  • Surreal… I was just at your house "tromboning" this past Saturday (November 26th 2016). You are an inspiration to all low brass players and your passion for music was contagious. You showed me the important role of the Bass trombone and it wouldn’t be my primary instrument if it wasn’t for you. I’m thankful for all the years of lessons (November of 2010-January of 2015), playing in your brass ensembles, random get-togethers to play duets, trios, quartets, holiday honks, and for hooking me up with a Conn 62H Bass trombone to replace my Holton a couple years back. I’m truly grateful and I will cherish all the knowledge and memories you have given me throughout the years of private lessons. I’ll continue to practice, perfect, and perform those “money notes.” I’m extremely sorry and deeply saddened for your loss Paula. Glenn, you will always be remembered by your students, friends and family. RIP forever, my teacher and friend. Stephen Randall
  • Glenn was a wonderful colleague and friend. I'll miss him. Steve Hix
  • I am very sorry for your family's loss. Many people have found comfort in the words of encouragement found in the bible at Acts 24:15 Bill
  • Glenn was a great guy. I first started taking private lessons from him in 2011, and I definitely would not be where I am withought him. He helped me with so much music in the last five years, and I loved going to the summer ensembles that he took time out of his schedule to organize for us students. I, and many others, will miss Glenn. Sam Gaecke
  • Our hearts go out to you Paula. The loss of a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend is tremendous. Our son, Samuel, will miss his weekly visits and lessons from Glen and will forever treasure the time he did have with Glen's guidance. Because of Glen, Samuel loves playing the trombone, going to Blue Lake Camp/Internation, and playing with the summer ensemble with Glen's group. May the Lord bless and keep you, Paula, and hold Glen in His loving hands. Our prayers to the rest of the family as well. Gaecke Family
  • I met Glenn while playing in the Dearborn Jazz Band since then we played in many groups together. He was a kind and great friend he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Ray Oset
  • Although I did not know Glenn very well, I was friends with his wonderful wife Paula for many years. Glenn's passing came as a big shock, because other than a fall on the ice some years back, I never knew him to be sick. May the dear Lord welcome him to his final reward to await his rejoining with his wife, Paula. Diane Hines
  • Glenn cared enough to advocate for everyone, honoring the aspirations of union members everywhere. We're all poorer for his passing. Michael J. McGillivray
  • Glenn was an amazing musician and terrific person. I worked with him for months playing the Lion King and other musicals, and he was always dedicated, always prepared, always expressive. He was kind to everyone. His students must have been his pride and joy because BOY, did they play well!! He asked me to guest conduct his trombone band, I think he called it, which consisted of trombone choirs at different levels. I was shocked how well he had these students trained, and how acutely they were listening to each other, as they played. Then he told me he gives a free lesson to any student that practices more than 3 hours a day. So these kids are REALLY practicing!!!!! I am lucky if I can get students to practice an hour a day, so I don't know how he inspired them to work so hard, but he did. Their intonation was almost at a professional level, even though they were just kids. So his teaching really inspired me. Never heard anyone ever speak ill of Glenn, because he lead an exemplary life. I will really miss him, and know so many other will, too. Sue Mutter
  • Glenn was a colleague and Vice-President of the Musicians' Union. He was very passionate about our Community Orchestras and convinced us to negotiate the first Multi-employer agreement. His dedication to that end has helped provide Metro Detroit with very gifted professional orchestra musicians and high level Community Orchestras. Thank you Glenn for your service and condolences to his family and friends Gordon Stump President Emeritus Detroit Federation of Musicians
  • We will miss you Glenn. Brian Moon
  • I studied with Glenn throughout high school and helped out at his low brass get-togethers the past few summers during college. I wouldn't be where I am today as a musician and person without his guidance and support. I'll never forget playing duets with him, especially the flower duet from Lakme. He was a great teacher and even better person. Rest in peace Glenn. Ian Lester
  • I'm so sorry to hear the very sad news. Glenn and I were in the Cass Tech Symphony Band together. He was a great guy and will be missed. Rest in Peace, Glenn - Sylvester Rivers Sylvester Rivers
  • What a shock to hear that Glenn is gone at such a young age! It was nearly 50 years ago that, as a new faculty member at Oakland Univ, I heard this terrific playing coming from a practice room. I didn't hesitate, but barged in and introduced myself. (He wasn't an OU student—he was there for some other reason, but took the opportunity to get in some licks in the practice room.) That was the beginning, but I learned so much from Glenn over the years. A terrific musician, with vast and diversitied experience behind him. The field of Music is the poorer for his death. David Daniels
  • I remember Glenn sitting behind me in the Cass Tech Symphony Band. Those were warm wonderful days, a super band and he was a great musician. Sharing the camaraderie that was felt while playing together in a superb ensemble is an indescribable transformative experience . Also hearing him in the Michigan Philharmonic later in life was a special treat. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends. norma keil shaw lmsw
  • Glenn had a tremendous amount of passion for performing and working with others. I will always be grateful for his encouragement and support in my pursuit to be the best musician and teacher I can be. There were many things I explored and accomplished with the his guidance. I would not be where I am today without the strong foundation he set for me, and his personal belief in me. Joshua Tavana

  • Glenn was my trombone private lesson teacher throughout middle school and high school. Glenn was as genuine and as kind as they come. He was an incredible teacher, an inspiring musician, and someone I looked up to for most of my formative years. Let me be 100% clear, I would not be where I am today without Glenn's guidance, teaching, and passion. Glenn inspired me to be better, to work harder, to achieve my goals. He instilled in me a passion for music that gave me the incredible opportunity to attend Michigan State University and study in the trombone studio of Ava Ordman. I owe so much to Glenn and I will never forget him and what he gave me. Rest In Peace Glenn. I am forever thankful. My deepest condolences to the family. Joshua Sholler

  • Glenn taught my son, Matthew, for many years at HFCC. His gentle, professional manner was a perfect fit. I often sat in a far part of the room working on lesson plans for an unexpected band position I held. I also learned many things from Glenn. He was a true blessing in our life. I am sorry for the huge unexpected hole left in your life. Denise Butterfield Denise Butterfield
