Condolences

  • It was with great shock and sadness that I learnt of the premature passing of a dear friend and collegue. Saad wrote a poem in Arabic titled "The Spruce Shrub" which I think referred to a shrub at his home. I paraphrase his beautiful poetry into English as best as I can: "death takes lives as it wishes, but he who attained knowledge and achievements does not die". I cannot think of a more fitting epithet than his own words. He went on to say: "Thoughts steal into my mind as I dream of the gardens of youth, Eh Karbala!" Muzahim Al-Jalili
  • A shocking and sad loss. A dear and hospitable friend with whom I had many frank and smart discussions about Arabic script, politics and learning; the man with a deep fascination and knowledge of his native script and who magnanimously recommended DecoType for the production of the New York University Press' Library of Arabic Literature, a project that was to become a major contribution to the acknowledgement of the Arab contribution to world civilisation. Our heart is with Sabine and the kids. Thomas Milo
  • Saad, you will stay in my heart and mind ever. Now I can say I lost the best friend and human. Sleep in peace. Saad
  • It goes without saying that your life was cut too short. The loss and grief will never leave us as you were gone too soon. You will always be loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. Rest in peace. Eman Abulhab
  • My dear uncle gone way too soon. I have loved and admired you my whole life and always will. You were truly a rare human, you were quality in every way. You are so missed and loved. Zahraa Abulhab
  • My heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time. May you find peace and solace in knowing what a lasting an impression Saad had on so many of his colleagues at Baruch where I still work as well as throughout CUNY. He gave us his time and expertise, but also he gave his friendship and support freely, sharing his life experiences and knowledge. We loved and admired him for what he accomplished and gave to the world through his unique inventions and masterful scholarship. His legacy will endure. We will miss him dearly and pray you find comfort in the lasting memories you shared, a testament to his love and devotion to you all. Lisa A Ellis
  • It is impossible to express in words the loss we feel without you with us. You were more than an uncle, but a mentor and a friend. Your legacy will continue through your scholarship and contributions to the world, through us, and through all who were impacted by you. We love and miss you. Aseel Abulhab
  • Oh, my brother, my twin, my first teacher…will miss you …I cannot forget our childhood, jumping and playing. Cannot forget the first letter we wrote to each other and the first book you gave me to read. Will feel the emptiness in my life, and the sadness as long as I live. It will be hard to imagine living without talking to you, asking your opinion and your brilliant thoughts. Will miss you. Osama Abulhab
  • I am very sorry for your loss. I hope you will find comfort in the days and years ahead with your memories. When I worked at Baruch with Saad he often mentioned his family and I know he loved you dearly. Rita Ormsby
