Charlie Bates Sr., cherished husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2024, in Southgate, Michigan, at the age of 83. Born on June 11, 1941, in Kona, Kentucky, Charlie lived a full and industrious life, rooted in the values of hard work and dedication.
Charlie spent his career as an Operator in the steel industry, where he was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to excellence. Beyond his professional life, he found joy in tinkering with small engines, particularly lawn mowers, displaying a knack for making things run smoothly just like his own life.
An avid sports enthusiast, Charlie was a devoted fan of both the Detroit Tigers and Lions. He relished watching baseball games and cheering on his favorite teams. In his quieter moments, he enjoyed watching game shows and was particularly fond of the movie "Christmas Vacation," which brought laughter and joy to family gatherings.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ida Bates, along with ten siblings: five brothers and five sisters, whose memories he cherished deeply.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary, who was his steadfast companion and partner in all things. Together they raised two children, Mary (Michael) Richmond and Charlie Bates Jr., instilling in them the values of family and resilience.
Charlie's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Brittany (Matthew) Leclaire and Brandon (Lilliana Wittenberg) Richmond, who fondly remember their grandfather’s wisdom and love. He was also a proud great-grandfather to granddaughter Elliana Richmond.
He is survived by his sister Sue (Albert Jr.) Griess, who shared many fond memories of their childhood in Kentucky. Charlie's extended family includes many nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Charlie Bates Sr. will be remembered for his kindness, his unwavering support of his family, and his ability to bring a smile to those around him. His spirit and love will live on through the many lives he touched.
