Obituary
Jay Donald Burgess, born January 22, 1939, in Monroe, Michigan, passed away on March 1, 2026, at the age of 87. A lifelong resident of Monroe, Jay was known for his dedication to his work, his artistic talents, and his service to his country.
Jay began his career as a Machine Operator for a local paper mill, a position he held with pride and diligence until his retirement. His strong work ethic was matched by his creative spirit; he enjoyed painting, creating intricate photos made out of beads, and woodworking. Jay's hands were never idle, and his passion for carpentry was evident in the many projects he undertook throughout his life.
In addition to his professional and artistic endeavors, Jay proudly served in the United States Army, embodying the values of honor and duty that he carried with him throughout his life.
Jay was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gertrude McAvoy-Burgess; his parents, James and Lela; and his daughter, Dianne Peterson. He is survived by his loving children, Dana Hammerschmidt, Duane (Debbie) Burgess, and Deron Burgess. He leaves behind cherished memories with his grandchildren, Miranda Burgess, Katie Hammerschmidt, Natalie (Dayna) Burgess, and Matthew Hammerschmidt. Jay is also survived by his siblings, Janice Bragg, Bruce Burgess, and Edwin (Jill) Burgess, as well as his son-in-law, Lawrence Peterson, and 14 nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A service to celebrate Jay's life will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 10:00 AM, with interment to follow at Michigan Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Jay may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Jay's legacy of kindness, creativity, and service will be remembered by all who knew him.
