Obituary

Norma Louise Baker, age 93, passed peacefully from this life surrounded by the love of her family and the assurance of her faith in Jesus Christ.

Norma was born on November 7, 1932, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Ervin and Whitney Spann. An only child, she faced adversity at a very young age when her mother passed away from kidney disease while Norma was still a little girl. Raised by relatives and grandparents in the Hohenwald, Tennessee area, she developed a resilience, determination, and appreciation for family that would shape the rest of her life. She often said that all she ever wanted growing up was a family of her own, and she spent the next nine decades building exactly that.

As a student, Norma excelled both academically and socially. She was a straight-A student, a cheerleader, and a star basketball player. With a smile, she would often say that all she really wanted to do was get good grades and score baskets. The discipline, energy, and enthusiasm she displayed during those years remained with her throughout her life.

While still a young woman, Norma met the love of her life, Jimmie S. Baker. Their marriage became a partnership that spanned decades, weathering life’s challenges and celebrating its blessings. Together they built a home, raised a family, and created a legacy of faith, hard work, and devotion that continues through their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Norma never met a stranger. She possessed a remarkable gift for conversation and connection. Whether meeting someone for the first time or reconnecting with an old friend, she could quickly discover shared acquaintances, experiences, or family connections. Friends often marveled at her ability to make meaningful relationships wherever she went. Her warmth, curiosity, and genuine interest in others made people feel valued and welcomed.

Her Christian faith was the foundation of her life. She loved studying God’s Word, encouraging others in their faith, and sharing the hope she found in Jesus Christ. She faithfully participated in Bible studies and was always eager to invite others to join her. Her faith sustained her through both joyful seasons and difficult trials, and she remained steadfast in her confidence of eternal life through Christ.

More than any accomplishment, Norma was proud of her family. She delighted in hearing about the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She celebrated their successes, prayed for them faithfully, and never stopped encouraging them. Her greatest joy was simply being together with those she loved.

Norma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jimmie S. Baker; her parents, Irving and Whitney Spann; and many cherished family members and friends who welcomed her into eternity.

She leaves behind her beloved children, Jimmie Kaye Curtis, Michael (Kathy) Baker, Robert Patrick (Coleen) Baker and Stephanie (Greg) Bennett. Dearest grandmother of 11, great-grandmother of 15 and great-great grandmother of 4.

While her family grieves her absence, they rejoice in the promise of the Gospel and the assurance that Norma’s earthly journey has given way to eternal life. Her life stands as a testimony to God’s faithfulness, the power of perseverance, and the blessings of family. Her memory will be treasured by all who knew and loved her.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me".

Memorial service information to be announced by the family.

  • God bless this God fearing lady,it was just two weeks ago I got to speak to her in a lengthy conversation at her late husbands memorial dinner. I knew all four of her children for many years, but this was the first time I got to know Norma and recognize why her children have grown to be such kind and complete people because they had a wonderful mother. • Mrs. Norma was the person that brought me back to church over 30 years ago. She would tell me No that was God. Well God never used anyone more than her. Anyone that met her saw Christ in action. I know she is rejoicing in heaven today. David Belken

  • Her family in Hohenwald, TN was so looking forward to seeing her this summer, laughing, hugging, tallking about and making more memories. I have fond memories of those times in the past. Since she and I looked alike, I was always called Little Norma, which was always a compliment to me. She was a genuine, down to earth person. Even though we won't get to spend time together this summer, I know we will one day. God Bless You, my Big Norma. I'll be praying for her family she leaves behind for strength to get through this difficult time. Glenda Nutt Hammack
  • Today I honor and remember my dear friend, Norma. Norma taught me how to speak with Jesus, not through perfect words, but through a genuine and personal relationship with Him. She showed me what God's love looks like by the way she lived her life every day. She was a true Christian in every sense of the word, sharing kindness, compassion, and Christ's love with everyone she met. Her faith was not something she simply talked about; it was something she lived. Through her words, actions, and unwavering trust in God, she touched countless lives and brought people closer to Him. I am forever grateful for the blessing of her friendship and for the impact she had on my spiritual journey. Because of Norma, my faith is stronger, and my relationship with Jesus is deeper. Though my heart is saddened by her passing, I rejoice knowing she is now in the presence of the Savior she loved so dearly. Her legacy of faith, love, and grace will continue to live on in all of us who were blessed to know her. Thank you, Norma, for showing me what it means to walk faithfully with Christ and for teaching me how to draw closer to Him. You will always be loved, missed, and remembered. Praying that God surrounds Norma's family with His comfort, strength, and peace during this difficult time. May they feel His loving presence and find comfort in the many beautiful memories she leaves behind. *"Well done, good and faithful servant."* — Matthew 25:23 ❤️🙏🏻 Cheryl
  • The first time I met Miss Norma, she walked up to me in the lobby of TCOC and said, "I couldn't help but overhear, because I was eavesdropping." I fell in love with her immediately. Such a wonderful woman with the strongest faith I have ever witnessed. I know she is right where she always wanted to be. xo Lori Drumm
