Obituary

Randolph Bates, born on August 2, 1954, in Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away on April 1, 2026, in Taylor, Michigan, at the age of 71.

Randolph was a man who cherished the simple pleasures in life. He found great joy in riding his Harley through the open roads, feeling the wind and freedom that came with each journey. Family was at the heart of all he did; he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and love.

A dedicated caretaker of his home, Randolph took pride in tending to his lawn, ensuring it was always a welcoming space. He also had a passion for playing cards, enjoying countless hours of friendly competition and camaraderie with those dear to him.

In his younger years, Randolph served his country with honor, enlisting in the Army for four years during the Vietnam era. This period of service was a source of pride for him throughout his life.

Randolph is preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Helen Bates, and his beloved son, Larry Lawrence Edmonds.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Mary Ann Bates, and his children, Nicholas (Meghan) Bates and Tyler Bates. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Charlotte Bates and Natalie Bates. He is also survived by his siblings, Deborah (Paul) Davis and Tony (Torchie) Bates, who will miss him dearly.

Randolph will be remembered for his passions, his dedication to family, and the warmth and kindness he shared with all who knew him.

Condolences

  • Wolfie, I have so many wonderful memories to cherish and hold close to my heart. I've been so privileged to have been able to ride our Harleys together, share evenings with you and Mary Ann's from playing cards to yummy bbq's. There's so much more, years more of memories I will carry through my life of you. Your smiles are contagious. I'm going to miss pulling up in the driveway seeing your smiling face while you're sit in your truck or sitting in the garage. It meant the world/a privilege to have had you in my life. Your caring and kindness will stay with me forever! Love D'iane Ewalt

  • Our prayers to Randy’s family and all the lives he touched. Randy was a great lifelong friend to Dave and became a dear friend to me when Dave and I married. We are in our Alaska home right now and have watched his memorial video many times. We cry, laugh and reminisce of all the wonderful times spent with him. No one had better jokes than Randy! God Bless his soul and may all who loved him find comfort in their memories. Sheila Kimble
