Obituary

Andrew C. Claps, of Livonia, Michigan, passed away on January 07, 2018, after a nine-month battle with Glioblastoma. Born March 16, 1967, in Queens, New York, Andrew lived in Michigan for more than 20 years. His overwhelming passion in life was music—listening to it, reading about it, and talking to others about it—and he was also an audiophile interested in assembling the best possible stereo equipment with which to play that music, including his favorite bands, Badfinger, Thin Lizzy, and Fleetwood Mac. He was fascinated by the ocean—his favorite movie was Jaws, and his favorite book was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea—and he loved horror movies. Andrew was a true people person who enjoyed talking to anyone about anything, and was always cracking jokes to make someone smile. He handled his illness with a grace that left a lasting impression on his friends, family, and the many medical professionals he interacted with. He is survived by his wife, Ellice Engdahl; his cat, Tunskies; close family in Michigan and Florida; and extended family and friends around the country. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Patricia Claps. His cremation took place at “The Witness Crematory” located inside of Michigan Memorial Funeral Home. Donations may be made in Andy’s memory to the Michigan Humane Society.

Condolences

  • Ellice, I am so sorry for your loss. It was a real honour to have met Andy and spent time with you both on my visits to Detroit. I will treasure the memories of our in-depth conversations of British music and never ceased to be amazed by Andy's encyclopeadic knowledge and sense of fun. At the time I referred to him as a 'legend' and he truly was...gone but never forgotten. My deepest sympathy, Paul Paul Davis
  • I grew up in Queens , NY about 10 blocks away from Andy. We went to the same Middle school and high school, even though Andy was 2 years younger and was in my brothers grade, I thought of Andy as family. When I got my license I would cruise with Andy, Al and Jerry my brother up and down the boulevard. We had so much fun racing, going to clubs, and doing fun crazy things.Andy didn't have any siblings as his parents had him later in life. Unfortunately we lost touch with him and until recently when I heard the tragic news. I' m Thankfull to God I got to speak to him in December many times as we reminisced old memories.I made Andy laugh and let him know I was devastated and will mourn his loss tremendously. Even suffering with his cancer Andy was funny, strong, accepting and exhibiting such strength that amazed me so much I even questioned his condition and told him I' d fly up and kick his butt if he was tricking me, as he we both laughed. Ellice Thank you for the updates and for being a good wife and taking care of my Andy all those years. I'm sure he is now with his parents, and may God bless him. Goodbye my friend, I love you Andy and I will see you again. Edward Delcampo

  • Ellice, I read the news of Andy's death with great sorrow. Even though he was battling cancer, Andy was so courageous and a joy to be around. You were such a source of strength for him. I was blessed to spend what little time I did with you both. Although grief may envelope you now, I pray that you find peace and joy in your memories together, Greg Greg. ACS Volunteer
  • Ellice, I want you to know how thankful I am that I got to know Andy. He was so fun to be around. He helped me so much with the playlist for Erin’s party last January and I so appreciated that. I loved being around his energy and spirit, especially during our last visit to your home. I will miss him, but I will also always remember him. Much love to you, Jason Jason Hammond
