Gus J. Campbell 95 of Clayton IN. passed away on June 16, 2018 peacefully at the home of daughter Vicki L. and Greg Sr. Sawmiller. Gus was born April 12, 1923 in Gideon, Missouri to the late William Gus and Daisy (Seals) Campbell. He was also preceded in death by Oweda (Hall) Campbell (Linda Adler Mother in 1949) brothers: Floyd Campbell, Ted Campbell, Sister: Bessie Wilson. He was united in marriage to his wife of 63 years Fonda L. Allison on January 22, 1954, who preceded him in death on July 31, 2017 and daughter: Karen Randolph in October of 1985. Growing up during the depression on a south eastern Missouri farm, we learned of a hard work ethic instilled into the family even at a very young age. Hoeing and picking in the cotton fields. cutting and splitting firewood for heating and cooking, feeding the livestock and hunting for a favorite pastime. We were told extensive stories of the life and times of his family on the farm. Gus was drafted by the U.S. Army and entered military service in Feb of 1943 and fought in the Normandy campaign during World War II. His Anti Aircraft Artillery unit landed on Omaha Beach in June of 1944. The allied invasion to free German occupied France. He Honorably Discharged at Jefferson Barracks Missouri on March 21, 1946 and he was always willing to share of his military experiences. Gus moved and settled in Michigan in 1954 where he and Fonda met, raised our family as a fun loving father & mother and we attended the Church of God in Ypsilanti where he loved helping with building maintenance and later working with youth. He instilled a hard work ethic in us children by example and often would give us a task to accomplish and if it wasn't done when he got home from work...He better not find us playing ball or otherwise. He loved gardening but even more than that...sharing the fruits of his labor with family, friends, work associates and church family. He would often share his faith which was dear to him and political ideals which wasn't always received with enthusiasm. From child raising years to retirement years Dad and Mom traveled often but it was for the express purpose of visiting family or friends and helping with a task while there. His heart was to do for others. Gus and Fonda moved to Indiana in 2002 and attended the Church of God in Mooresville, IN. where they were very active in small groups & nursing home ministries. Fonda (mom) is mentioned numerously in this eulogy because where one of them were, you would find the other, they were always together. Gus was survived by children: Linda Sue (David) Adler of Gladwin, MI, Kenneth Ray (Sue) Campbell of Belleville, MI. Terry William (Judy) Campbell of Clayton, IN. Vicki L, (Greg Sr) Sawmiller of South Gate, MI. Sisters: Geraldine Malone of Charlotte, NC. Eva (J.L.) Horton of Herculaneum, MO. Grandchildren: 9 and Great Grandchildren: 17.
