Obituary

James William Connolly, born on July 8th 1950 in Trenton, Michigan – passed away in his hometown on July 5th, 2025 – just shy of his 75th birthday.

Mr. Connolly was a dedicated Artilleryman of the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry Division based in Ft. Hood, Texas. He worked in the steel industry many years as an overhead crane operator, and also for the City of Romulus Water Department. Keeping him from getting a job done was a tall order. Graduating from Trenton High with the class of 68, he proudly wore the badge of Downriver Rat, and dearly loved all the friends he grew up with.

Jimmy was a man of many passions. He cherished the times up north, visiting Mackinac, camping with family, as well as his days living in Fairview and Oscoda. Constantly surrounding himself in music, he loved listening to and collecting albums – always reciting lyrics and singing. He performed as lead vocalist in several bands along with his friends. He was a huge fan of all of Detroit's sports teams, especially the Red Wings, and loved Michigan State – always chanting – "Go Green! Go White!" in the background.

James was known for his sense of humor, always trying to get people to laugh. Long hours spent playing cards or watching classic movie after movie was his idea of a great day. While he spent years telling stories about how he would move to a tropical island, he was always proudly rooted in Michigan. Loving to talk about all the great places to visit in our state, and sites that used to be popular but are now part of history.

He was preceded in death by his parents William Connolly and Dolores Lempke, and sister Coreen Walmsley and her husband Paul.

James leaves behind a legacy of family, survived by his children Shannon, Justin, Sean and Eric Connolly, along with his stepchildren Anna and Bobby Lewis. His memory will also be cherished by his grandchildren Blake, Arielle, and Delaney – as well as his great-grandson Leo. Also surviving is his sister Beverly Chinavare, several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. His family will forever hold him dear in their hearts.

James William Connolly will be remembered fondly by all whose lives he touched, leaving behind a tapestry of memories filled with laughter, music and love

  • I'll miss my Uncle Jimmy! He came to the family reunions bringing his famous taco salad and stories. He wished me a Happy Mother's Day because he didn't want to leave me out of the wishes text chain. But then he said I was a mom, a cat mom and that it was "purfect". Showed his humor. Love you! Faye Walmsley
  • Uncle Jimmy .. you will greatly missed by this Veteran, even though I was Navy🚢 and you were Army 🪖 liking to go to the range to blow stuff up. HA! I loved it when you would babysit us as kids and play ALL the Beatles and Monkee records and SING!!! 🎶🎵🎤 I also remember the 3 stoges movie marathons you did with my Dad Paul and just bust a gut! Your camping stories were great and your love of family was enormous. I will really really miss you. ❤️‍🩹🫶🥺 Love your niece Kaye .. Kaye Richey
  • Uncle Jimmy will be truly missed! I have fond memories of my trip with your family up to Mackinaw, your band concerts, camping trips, endless parties, playing Euchre when you came to visit mom, and recently our yearly picnics in Ohio and Christmas luncheons. You always had a smile and huge sense of humor, filling a room with laughter with all your jokes. I really appreciate all the visits and support you gave to our family while mom was going through her health issues the last 2 years of her life. She always lit up when she saw you and you would sing to her. You always took the time to send us texts on holidays and would check-in from time to time to just say hi or send a joke. You called me an angel for setting up family gatherings. I hope you are singing and laughing with the angels now!! I love you! Heather Deal (Walmsley)
