Obituary

Born on June 8, 1965 in Pittsburgh, PA to William Lee and Parthenia (Powell) Coley, Lamond Maurice Coley was the fourth of six children, being the youngest son. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Lillis Williams and his paternal grandparents Moses and Lillar Coley. The Coley family relocated to Detroit, MI in 1966 and finally to Willis, MI where he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1983. This is where he met the love of his life and wife, Sheila Williams. Yes, high school sweethearts! Lamond was the father of six beautiful children—five daughters and one son, and the grandfather of eight wonderful grandchildren. He was a caring, loving and supportive father, husband, son, brother, grandfather and friend. His late uncle Andrew Hill gave him the nickname “Happy Jack” early in life because of his happy demeanor—always laughing. Happy Jack was shortened to “Happ” and that’s what most people knew him as, along with “Chubba” and “Kool-Aid.” He was also affectionately called “Pops” by his son-in-laws. He was always working to provide for his family and was admired for his industrious work ethics. Everyone always depended on him for advice, support, countless car repairs, and a good laugh. A man defined as warm-hearted, courageous, brave and strong, he loved to do good deeds for anyone and never looked for anything in return. Family was everything to him and he had a nickname for just about everyone.Being outdoors was Lamond’s favorite pastime—whether it be tinkering in his workshop, fishing, boating or just riding his tractor in the yard that he worked so hard to acquire. He also enjoyed music, dancing and trash-talking especially when playing cards, but most of all, he enjoyed playing with his puppy Tia. Lamond always greeted everyone with his pleasant award-winning smile, and often went above and beyond what was expected of him. He was a diligent, faithful and committed employee for the City of Ann Arbor where he formed many lasting friendships. He finally retired in December 2012 after 23 years of dedicated service. He was also employed at the University of Michigan for 10 years. Lamond unexpectedly departed this life on Monday, May 20, 2013. He leaves to cherish his loving memory his parents William and Parthenia Coley; his devoted wife, Sheila Coley; six children: Angelise (DeShawn) Thornton, NaTasha Coley, TaQuisha (Riccardo) Boone, Donald Tubbs, Alainna Coley, and Mauricia Coley. Eight grandchildren: DeShawn Jr., Mekhi, Jai’den, and A’maia Thornton; ShaeLynn and Braeden Troutman; Amaria and Riccardo Jr., Boone. Two brothers: Tommie and Terril Cotton; three sisters: Carmen (Victor) Richardson, Rosa (Darran) Wilson, and Elainna (Ken) Sammons; three brother-in laws: Lester Jr., (Beverly); David (Sally), and Stanley (Carol) Williams; four sister-in laws: LaDonna Williams, Marsha (Danny) Nash, Darlene (James) Robinson, and Sharlene (Fred) Cobb; friend and mother Annette Avery McGhee. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, relatives and friends. He was an inspiration to us all and will be truly missed.
