Obituary

Ruby Maxine Cotton passed away November 7, 2011 from colon cancer. Born near Hume, Missouri, in December 1930, she studied nursing in Ft. Scott, Kansas, passing her boards in 1950 and embarking on a 45 year career. In 1954, she moved to Detroit and in 1957 helped open the doors of the new Outer Drive Hospital. For the next 33 years, until its closing in December 1990, she served as a staff nurse, head nurse, midnight shift supervisor and director of nursing. Said by peers to run the night shift with a “Velvet Fist”, Maxine was admired for her professionalism. dignity, strength and ability to use just the right touch of appropriate humor during stressful situations. Preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Roberta Smith and her husband Karl, she is survived by her son Christopher and sister Mary Ellen.
