Obituary

John Arthur Goniea, age 81, of The Villages, Florida, passed away on August 12, 2026. He was born on December 4, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Arthur and Doris Goniea.

John spent most of his life in Detroit before relocating to The Villages, Florida. He dedicated 34 years of his life to education as a beloved teacher, shaping the lives of countless students throughout his career.

John met his beloved wife, Maryann, in kindergarten. Their friendship blossomed into young love in high school, and the two were married at Our Lady of Lourdes in River Rouge, Michigan. Together, they shared a devoted marriage of over 58 years.

A man of deep faith, John was actively involved in his church, where he sang in the choir — a passion he had held since the age of six. He spoke beautifully and often about his faith, and it remained a guiding light throughout his life. He also gave generously of his time as a hospice volunteer and served as President of the Sable Chase Social Club.

Outside of his service to others, John enjoyed playing cards, entertaining friends, and traveling on cruises. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family.

John is survived by his loving wife, Maryann Goniea; his brothers, Joe Goniea and Greg Goniea and his wife Donna; and his son, Tom Goniea, with his wife, Karen Bertrand. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Doris Goniea, and his brothers Dave and Paul Goniea, who are survived by their wives, Eileen and Margaret.

In the words of his wife, Maryann: “John was a kind and generous soul. He loved people, he cared for the rights of everyone and wanted to see the world better than the way it is. The family appreciates the support of the church, neighbors, and dear friends, both Margaret and Frank. We know that John's spirit and soul are with his Lord, and we will hold him in our hearts forever.

The family will be receiving friends on Monday, August 17, 2026, between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM at Banks, Page & Theus Funeral Home, located at 410 Webster Street, Wildwood, Florida 34785.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, located at 5323 East County Road 462, Wildwood, Florida 34785, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at 11:30 AM.

A Repass gathering of friends and family will be held between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM at Banks, Page & Theus Funeral Home, located at 410 Webster Street, Wildwood, Florida 34785, immediately following the Mass of Resurrection.

Burial and interment will occur at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery, located at 30895 West Huron River Road, Flat Rock, Michigan 48134.
