Obituary
Nina Guerra, born March 26, 1934, in Pikeville, Kentucky, passed away on August 9, 2026, in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 92.
Nina was a feisty and spirited woman with a strength and determination that carried her throughout her life. She was a true warrior, facing many battles and hardships along the way and overcoming them with remarkable resilience. No matter what life placed in her path, Nina found the strength to keep going. She was tough, determined, and a fighter through and through—a woman who proved time and again just how strong she truly was.
She also wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, and those who knew Nina knew exactly where they stood with her. Her bold character, lively presence, and unmistakable way of being herself were part of what made Nina so memorable, and they will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
A devoted homemaker, Nina’s life centered around her family and the generations that grew around her. She took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The family she leaves behind is perhaps her greatest legacy and a beautiful reflection of her long and meaningful life.
Nina had a special love for music, particularly bluegrass and the unmistakable sound of the banjo. There was something about the lively spirit of bluegrass music that seemed to match Nina herself—full of energy, character, and heart.
Nina absolutely loved scratch-off tickets! In fact, she would not talk to anyone until she was done with her scratch off. There was nothing like the excitement of scratching off a ticket, always believing the next might be the lucky one. It brought her joy, a little thrill, and plenty of smiles along the way.
Nina was preceded in death by her parents, John Alec Jones and Versie Opal (nee Kendrick) Jones; her siblings, Inez (nee Jones) and Frank Toth; Janrose Jones, Lizzie (nee Jones) Covert and Jack Mann, Lawrence Jones, Fannie (nee Jones) and Paul Mortenson; her son-in-law, Rodney Stewart; and her daughter-in-law, Donna Guerra.
Nina is survived by her children, Brenda Stewart, Harvey Morrison, Annie (Eddie) Johnson, Junior Guerra, and Joe (Salena) Guerra. She was the proud grandmother of Crystal (Franklin) Bickford, Ann Marie Johnson, Charlotte Johnson, Rodney (Kara) Stewart, Brittany Stewart, Tiffany Stewart, Chris (Claire) Morrison, Emmanuel Guerra, Ginny Guerra, Joseph Guerra, Brandon Guerra, Nathan Guerra, and Chelsea Guerra. Her legacy continues through her beloved great-grandchildren, Kason, Kolten, Hector, Noah, Landon, Seth, Mercedes, Kruz, Brix, Samara, Christopher, Cole, Henry, Junior, and Rose.
Nina is also survived by her sisters, Marlene Hutchins and Inez May Webb, along with many extended family members and loved ones who will cherish her memory.
A visitation will be held at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home on Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 2:00 – 8:00pm with a service at 6:00pm. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Guerra Family by clicking the link to the left.
Nina will be remembered for her strength, determination, love of music and scratch-off tickets, and the unforgettable presence she brought wherever she went. She fought many battles during her 92 years and met them with the heart of a warrior. Though her family will deeply miss her presence, the strength she demonstrated, the memories she created, and the love she gave will continue to live on through the generations that follow.
