Condolences

  • I remember Mr. Haywood as my principal at Downing. We watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas. But before the show started we saw a recording of Mr. Haywood being a grinch. It was really funny and I've remembered that all these years! 47 years later, I recently received a card from him letting me know that he was praying for my wife and I as my my wife battles brain cancer. I know he has had an impact on so many and I'm so thankful that I had the privilege of being one of his students and friends. Scott Yahr
  • I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Haywood, my condolences for all of his family. He was a wonderful man & I am so greatful that I had the opportunity to have him as one of my teachers at Memorial Elementary. Thank you, Mr. Haywood for being one of a kind & such an inspiration to so many! Angela (Swift)Westbay
  • I had many fond memories of Doug as a teacher, administrator & friend. He was always a strong, steady figure in Riverview. As a police officer (working in the schools) I always knew that Doug was there for anything. Pat Knight
  • My condolences to the family. Doug was instrumental in my becoming a teacher in Riverview. We shared the same hometown in Kentucky. In fact, our fathers worked together. We shared many memories of Wayland, Ky. and of course the Kentucky Wildcats. Doug excelled in all the positions he held in the schools and was an asset to the community. I am forever grateful to him. May God comfort you during this time of loss. Claude Frady
  • Uncle Doug was the GREATEST uncle of all time! I learned so much from this Mans Man! I will miss sharing a Michigan football story or his Beloved Kentucky Wildcats Basketball Story! I loved the stories he would share with me about our family ,playing sports and growing up in a small Eastern KY town that he always called home! I will miss you Uncle Doug ! Chuck Hughes
  • Mr. Hayward was my 5th grade teacher in 1986 at Memorial, and no teacher had more influence on my academic and career choice than him. He told me I could go to college and spent hours helping me study for the school and regional spelling bees. He fostered a belief in myself that I still carry to this day. Truly an amazing educator and man, and my favorite teacher ever. ~Dawn Dawn Rae Miller

  • Sincere condolences and best wishes to Jennie and all of Doug's wonderful family. He was Principal of Downing School in Riverview when I first started my Speech/Language Therapy career. During those years Doug was also a fellow teacher as well as Superintendent of Schools. He maintained the highest of standards for himself and his staff, yet, was always open to discussion and demonstrated immense respect for all of us who worked with him no matter which hat he was wearing at the time. My favorite memories of Doug will always be his sense of humor and his love of Halloween in the elementary schools. He often (maybe always) dressed up in a gorilla costume and told his class that he was Mr. Haywood's substitute for the day. There may still be former students who think the gorilla was their best substitute teacher ever. May special memories see you all through this loss and provide warm thoughts, comfort and strength always. My love and prayers, Becky Rogers Wynn Becky Rogers Wynn
  • Doug was a very close friend of mine for many years. We spent many long hours trying to catch as many walleye in the Detroit River and Lake Erie as possible. The last few years Doug invited me to several of his homes/cabins by the Pierre Marquette River so we could go fly fishing for King Salmon. Doug also loved to listen to music and take Jenny dancing. The six of us: Doug and Jenny, Charlie and Jan and Cheryl and myself would go ballroom dancing at Crystal Gardens every month. I'll miss Doug tremendously. He was my "Big Brother". Tom Brown
