Obituary

Dennis Don Holland passed away on February 13, 2021 after a long illness. Dennis loved the Lord, his family and sports. As with all experiences in his life, Dennis managed his illness with strength and grace, spending as much time with his loved ones as possible. On his final day, he was with his wife Ruth Ellen, whom he adored more than anything else in the world. Dennis was born on January 18, 1940 in Pikeville, TN to the late Albert and Alta Holland. He grew up in Detroit, MI. As a teen, he loved spending his time playing ball, excelling at football, baseball and basketball. As he got older, he earned a scholarship to play football at Western Michigan University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education. He later earned his master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. In his professional career, Dennis taught high school vocations and physical education at Lincoln Park High School for five years and for twenty-nine years at Riverview Community High School. Dennis was a member of the Church of Christ. He attended Vinewood in Detroit, Flat Rock in Flat Rock, MI and Westside in Elkton, KY. On Mother's Day 1963 he met Ruth Ellen at an afternoon baseball game and asked to drive her home. They saw each other every day after that drive and eventually married on August 18th, 1965. Two years later they started a family. Three girls would become the apple of his eye. As a family, they loved attending church and church functions with Dennis driving the bus to roller skating, Cedar Point amusement park, winter camp, youth rallies and chorus practices/concerts when they needed a driver. They loved camping and traveling to many parks, amusement parks, museums and historical locations spending many hours on the road leading to far too many fond memories to count. Being a kind and dependable husband and father was of the utmost importance to Dennis and he certainly did not disappoint when it came to wholeheartedly loving his family. Dennis is survived by his wife, Ruth Ellen of Riverview MI, his daughters, Denise (Jim) Wyniemko of Gladwin, MI, Aimee (Carl) Woody of Riverview, MI and Janeen (Rob) Abar of Brownstown Twp., a dearest beloved sister, Patsy Wilde of Cumming, GA, and four wonderful grandchildren; Alex Woody, Emily Wyniemko, AJ Abar and Jillian Wyniemko.
