Obituary

William "Bill" Rudy Helm, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, at home in New Boston, Michigan. Born on February 16, 1938, in Paducah, Kentucky, Bill lived a full and vibrant life of 87 years.

Bill was a man of simple joys, deeply cherishing time spent with family and friends. He found happiness in the little things—sharing a hearty breakfast with his Breakfast Club friends, or thrilling rides on his four-wheeler. A lover of nature and speed, Bill always had a special place in his heart for greyhounds and the great outdoors.

His hands were seldom idle, whether working on woodworking projects or playing a spirited game of cards. Bill was an avid supporter of Kentucky Wildcats Basketball, cheering them on and sharing his love of the team.

Bill was preceded in death by his loving parents, one sister, and two brothers. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen “Kathy” Helm; his children, Todd Helm, Julie Fargo and her husband Steve, Berta Lucas and her partner Tim; and his cherished grandchildren, Tyler, Derek, Brad, Allison, Marissa, and Colt. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his wonderful friends and neighbors including Lisa and Richard, John and Deb, Phil, Bob, Danny, Wes, Kenny, and too many others to list.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bill’s life during the visitation on Wednesday, August 13th, from 2-8 PM. Refreshments will be served throughout. A service in his honor will take place at 7 PM on the same day.

Bill’s family has chosen the passage below as a token of remembrance of his life:

“Each day was too short for all the thoughts he wanted to think,

All the walks he wanted to take,

All the books he wanted to read,

All the friends he wanted to see.”

Bill's warmth, humor, and love for life touched everyone he met, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Condolences

  • The obituary described Bill perfectly. He was always so friendly and had a sense of humor, he will be missed. Dee Dee Rawlins
  • Uncle Billy was always a light to be around. A person who no matter how introverted or unrelated your interests may be from his own, he'd find a way to chat. One of my fondest memories will be at our families summer barbecues at Aunt Kathy and his home. The first time Uncle Billy saw me playing on the side of his fridge with his custom magnetic wood marble track made from wood and his own hands. One of the most unique handmade items i've ever seen to this day. He grinnned ear to ear absolutely ecstatic I was so fond of one of his creations. While taking breaks from caring for his pork shoulders and fourwheeler rides with all the other kids, Uncle Billy made sure every time he came inside to check up on my progress. He was so happy to see what new set up I made or help me chase runaway balls around the kitchen. He even gave me suggestions on what to try next or how to make what I already had work. A memory that lays in the foundation of how I learned to problem solve as an engineer. Uncle Billy lived a long and wonderful life where he touched the hearts of so many. He will be deeply missed and continued to be deeply loved by the people around him. My deepest sympathies to everyone who is grieving the loss of such an incredible person. With love, his favorite great niece (hopefully), Rene Rene Kane
  • Bill was my, “Uncle Billy”. So many great memories. From our Holiday parties, birthday BBQs and just visits to see what’s been happening. He stepped in at a very difficult time in my life and became more like a father figure to me. I had lost my mother and he had lost his sister. From all that sadness, a special relationship was from that time until now. He will forever be with me, of this I have no doubt. I hope I can be that broad shoulder for you all now as his was for me many, many times. My thoughts are with all of you. Kathy Kathy Kane
  • There are never words to express the sadness of losing your husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend. With each day that passes it only makes us wish he was with us more. He was a bright light that always shined in our lives. I thank God every day for this beautiful soul I had the pleasure of calling friend and a second dad. He will forever be in my heart I love you all Lisa
