Obituary

Pastor William E. Hill was born on December 11, 1933 to the union of Mr. Tobe E. Hill and his wife, Matties Lucy (Cole) Hill in Lauderdale, Mississippi.

Willie, as he was lovingly known, moved to Detroit, Michigan at the age of eleven with his parents. Willie enjoyed playing sports, especially baseball which he excelled in. Willie played on various teams and leagues around the city of Detroit, and was scouted by many teams when he was just 14 years of age. The scouts told him he was too young at the time but they would keep an eye on him as he got older. He played baseball, basketball, and ran track and field at Detroit Chadsey High School. He was one of the city’s top pitching prospects while at Chadesy. Willie started his professional baseball career playing with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues. He later signed a contract to play with the Philadelphia Phillies professional baseball club, playing with one of their class AA minor league teams in Olean, New York.

On October 1, 1955 Willie was joined in marriage to Martha E. Brown. The couple just celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary earlier this month. To this union they had three children: Jeffery D., William B., and Brent T. Hill. Willie was saved at the Metropolitan Church of God in Detroit under the pastorship of Dr. James E. Massy. He would later become ordained and licensed through the national Church of God in Anderson, Indiana and the state of Michigan. Pastor Hill would later stablish a church in Sumpter Township named The Body of Christ Church of God.

Pastor Hill was active in all of the communities in which he lived. He coached youth baseball and basketball teams, formed a mentoring group of fathers called “The Dads’ Club” and opened up community gyms so that the youth had somewhere to play basketball.

On October 6th, 2024 Pastor Hill made his transition. Preceding him in death were his father Tobe Hill, mother Mattie Hill, two sisters Mary Sadler and Jeanette McDaniel, niece Carmen Hill, nephews Travis J, and Kenith D. Sadler.
He leaves to mourn a loving wife Martha Hill, three sons; Jeffery (Mary), Bernie (Angela), and Brent (Deanne), fourteen grandchildren; Devonne (Janay), Jeffery, She’lon Hill-Tucker (Solomon), Josh (Heather), Will “BJ”, Jieron Robinson, Ashley Hill-Campbell (Daryl), Jordan Freelon, Mikayla, Cole Walsh, Joel, Jillian, Anastasia, and Tayia Perault, twelve great grandchildren, a host of devoted nieces, nephews, close cousins and friends, and Cheri Perault.

Our Prayer is that you can love God as Pastor Hill did, always helping one another with love. God Bless you.

Condolences

  • He was first cousin to my brother in love Rev. Dr Jethro Mosley Jr. (mothers were sisters). We felt we were cousins; he will surely be missed. The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning, great is Thy faithfulness. Love and Prayers Theodore E and Reva Binion Henry

  • We send our deepest condolences and prayers to you all for your loss. May the love and memories of Mr. Hill stay in all of your hearts. May his legacy be shared to your family from generations to come. May your find strength and comfort from our Heavenly Father who comforts us. May you have the peace that passes all understanding. Ecclesiastes 7:1-4 says A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth. It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to house of feasting: for that is the end of all men: and the living will lay it to his heart. Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning: but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. May these words comfort you at this time and the time to come. We have a hope that we'll spend eternity with our savior Yahusha (Jesus) our Messiah. Yah(God) bless, Love you all, Mark & Gina Andrews & Family To the Hill Family
