Obituary

Akihiro Hattori Kunihiro β€œThe Garage Door Man,” born on March 30, 1954, in Okayama-Ken, Japan, passed away on January 2, 2025, in Alma, Michigan, at the age of 70.

Akihiro was a dedicated mason by trade, known not only for his skill and craftsmanship but also for the kindness and generosity he extended to all who knew him. His gentle demeanor and genuine interest in others allowed him to form lasting friendships wherever he went from his childhood in Brazil to his life in the United States, bringing joy and laughter to many lives.  Akihiro had a profound love for music, garage sales, and flea markets.

He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Sow and Virginia Kunihiro. Akihiro's legacy continues through his cherished family: children Rachel (Timothy) Brohl, Sabrina (Nick) Wright, Rebecca (Michael) Karpinski, Kimberly (Todd) Pershke, Kristopher Kunihiro, and Max (Kayla Charters) Kunihiro; his brother Jonathan Kunihiro; and his eleven adored grandchildren Zachary, Luke, Nathan, Isabella, Ava, Malachi, Evelyn, Tucker, Liliana, Stella, and Winter.

Akihiro will be remembered as a kind and caring soul, whose passion for life, family, and friends made an indelible mark on all who were privileged to know him.

Condolences

  • I will miss my dear brother, friend and protector when I think back to our childhood. I learned a lot from him. Since he was the oldest, he taught me by example mostly through his mistakes. As a younger brother I enjoyed every one of those mistakes and made sure to point them out to him πŸ˜‡. We later looked back on those times realizing how special those moments were. God blessed my brother, David, with a beautiful family. I know they will remember the special moments each and every one of them shared with him. This shows us that time waits for no one. We need to cherish the moments we have with our family so they will turn into good memories. May God give his family peace and comfort in their loss. Jonathan H Kunihiro
  • Akihiro! Dear cousin! So special, sensitive, kind, generous, courageous! Protector as Jonathan said! I remembered how spontaneously he showed his martial arts skills! I imagine two brothers together were great warriors, protecting each other. Helping each other. How I wished we could have had more time together. But the distance did not allow us to do so. Each followed our own steps that were taken a little far from each other. But few times together meetings were too precious that I will cherish in my memory. Being able to be together was wonderful. His simplicity, sincerity, kindness were your great wealth. Aki, you will be such special gift kept in my heart forever. Ruth Kunihiro Hirata
  • He was a kind, generous and supportive Brother Mason. He will be greatly missed. Patrick VanDeneede
