Obituary

Robert “Bob” Allen Kelly, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 7, 2026, at Hampton Manor Assisted Living in Dundee, Michigan, at the age of 82. Born on January 27, 1944, in Cass City, Michigan, Bob lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his community, and his hobbies.

After graduating from Huron High School in New Boston, Bob went on to Hillsdale College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education, and later earned a master’s degree as well. He spent the entirety of his 32-year career at his alma mater, teaching physics, algebra, and physical science in the Huron School District. The respect and admiration he earned from students and staff alike spoke to the kind of teacher and person he was.

Beyond his professional life, Bob was a man of many talents and interests. He was an avid woodworker, gardener, and beekeeper. His love for cooking and baking was well-known, especially his homemade pies crafted from fruit grown on his own trees. Bob’s hands were never idle, and his hard work was a testament to his character.

A dedicated sports enthusiast, Bob coached his son Rob’s baseball teams and lent his expertise to coaching football, basketball, and track. He never missed a sporting event involving his children or grandchildren, always cheering them on with pride and encouragement. His involvement in their lives was profound, earning him the title of “the Best Dad and Grandpa”.

Bob got saved at 12 years old and was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord through the very end. He was part of Calvary Baptist Church in Monroe, Michigan for many years. His kindness, compassion, selflessness, and generosity touched all who knew him. Known for his calm demeanor and positive outlook, Bob’s quick wit brought joy and laughter to those around him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Sherwell and Phyllis Kelly, and his brother-in-law, Chuck Drouillard. Bob leaves behind a loving family, including his children: Chrissy (Sean) Smelcer, Kimmy Estes, and Rob (Samantha) Kelly; his cherished grandchildren: Tyler (Marina) Smelcer, Jeff (Chandler) Smelcer, Jacob (Hope) Smelcer, Luke Smelcer, Zac Estes, Abby Estes, Ryan (Kelly) Francetich, Rylee Kelly, and Braden Kelly; and seven great-grandchildren: Myla, Aurora, Olivia, Reagan, Brady, Melody, and Benjamin. He is also survived by his ex-wife, mother of his children, and dear friend, Lawana (Tom) Benore; his sisters, Kay Drouillard and Jean (Dan) Chamberlain; as well as many other family members and friends.

A visitation will be held at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, from 2:00pm to 8:00pm, with a service at 6:30pm. A private interment will follow at Michigan Memorial Park.

Bob’s legacy of love, dedication, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered
