Obituary

Beverly Jean Lake, born December 7, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, passed away on May 21, 2026, in Wyandotte, Michigan, at the age of 91. A beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, her warmth and humor will be cherished forever by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Beverly was a woman of many talents and passions. She found great joy and solace in sewing and knitting, crafting beautiful pieces that reflected her creativity and attention to detail. Her love for quilting was not just a hobby but a way she expressed her care, often creating treasured gifts that brought comfort to family and friends. An avid reader, she appreciated the power of stories to transport and inspire. Her sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor could lighten any room, bringing laughter and smiles to those around her.

Beverly's compassion was boundless. Known for her generous spirit, she touched many lives with her willingness to help others whenever she could, always offering a kind word or a helping hand. She also had a deep affection for dogs, finding true companionship and joy in their presence.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband Martin Kane and her parents, Harold and Goldie Hunt, Beverly leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. She is survived by her devoted children, Jill Matthews and David “Butch” Lake; her cherished granddaughter, Dana (Brandon) Walker, along with many dear friends who became family over the years.

In remembering Beverly, we celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and service to others. Her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her, reminding us of the beauty in simple acts of kindness and the joy in sharing our passions with those we love.

Condolences

  • Dear Jill and David, I am so sad to hear that Bev is gone. I remember you saying, Jill, that you don’t handle death well. This one must be especially brutal for you. My heart truly aches for both of you, as well as for Dana and everyone else who loved her as I did. I met Bev in my early twenties. She was working at a community mental health clinic in Lincoln Park, and my case was assigned to her. I was a lonely and confused mess at the time. She was a wonderful therapist who helped keep me off the ledge for several months. When my insurance eventually ran out, rather than simply letting me go, she invited me to lunch and ultimately adopted me into her life. That’s when our friendship began. She was living in her apartment in Southfield then. Not long afterward, she started dating Marty. Soon they were married and moved into their penthouse condo in Wyandotte. They treated me like family. They had me over regularly and took me with them on outings and excursions. I had so much fun with them. Both of them were funny, smart, and playful. When they were first married, they loved sneaking into the bathroom while the other was showering and tossing ever-more-creative things over the shower curtain. They shared a goofy sense of humor, were wonderfully compatible and made great life partners. We shared the same taste in music and spent many happy hours listening to new albums together. They taught me to cook and gave me a lifelong love for spicy food. I still use pieces of cookware and kitchen tools they gave me. I remember sitting with them on the balcony watching fireworks, wandering through art fairs, and strolling past the shops (“Fogie Furniture”). But most of all, I remember their love, generosity, and kindness. They will live in my heart forever. I will be away during the memorial service, but my heart and my love will be there with you. Best wishes to both of you, Love, Nancy Nancy OBrien
