Obituary

John Lazere, a beloved member of the New Boston, Michigan community, passed away peacefully at the age of 63 on May 1, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at home. Born and raised in Southgate, Michigan, John was the son of the late Pete and Mary Lazere.

For over 30 years, John served as the head mechanic for Southgate Schools, where he dedicated his time and expertise to keeping the school's fleet running smoothly. After retiring from his position at Southgate Schools, John spent 12 years working as a Commercial Vehicle Inspector for the Michigan State Police. His dedication to his work was unparalleled, and his colleagues highly respected him.
John was an active community member and deeply involved in St. Stephen Usher's Club and the Knights of Columbus (Order #6549). He was passionate about his faith and always sought ways to give back to those around him.

An avid hunter, outdoorsman, meat grilling connoisseur, Jeopardy junkie, and a knack for telling the worst dad jokes ever, John was known for his contagious personality and his loveable, good-natured sense of humor. John's family was the center of his world, and he cherished his wife of 41 years, Colleen, and his children, Amanda (Carl) Siggett, John Jr. (Andrea) Lazere, Andrew (DeAnn) Lazere, and Nicholas (Megan) Lazere, and his eleven grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Robert and Richard. The viewing will be held at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home on Sunday, May 7, 2023, from 2:00pm to 8:00pm, with rosary from 6:00pm to 6:30pm. Instate will be held at St. Stephen Catholic Church in New Boston on Monday, May 8, 2023, at 11:30am with funeral service to follow at 12:30pm. John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the memories of those he touched.

Condolences

  • I had the pleasure of working with John at Southgate Schools Transportation Dept. We have lost a great person . He was friendly, funny, and great to work with. He kept our bases running and recused us when they broke down. He loved pulling pranks on us. John you will be truly missed. RIP friend. Sharon Schaller
  • Our condolences and prayers for Colleen and the children we have known for years as part of Saint Stephens church family. Much fun was had working with John, Colleen and kids at the church festival, ushers club & dances, building ball fields, etc. over 40+ years. John was a great husband, father and friend to many. He will be truly missed. May God bless his soul and let perpetual light shine upon him. RIP John Gary & Cindy Conley
  • My deepest condolences to John’s family. I had the honor of working with John at MSP. We both started in Monroe around the same time, and I was just an officer then. Years later, I got to supervise John, which always made me laugh a bit because John was more like a “work-Dad” to me than my employee. John had a heart of gold and wore it on his sleeve. He was a man that would do anything for you. He always took the time to ask about my family, and how the bucks were looking in the yard. I enjoyed every story he shared about his kids and grandkids and whatever the latest house project he was working on. John was just amazing professionally and personally. I have no doubt he touched many lives, and those memories will live on through all that knew him. You were one of the good ones, John, rest in peace. Danielle Stewart
  • My condolences to Colleen and the Lazere family. John and Colleen always made you feel welcome in their home. Their New Year's Eve parties were the best. Rest in peace, John. d85h3 Kenneth Wisth

  • I was saddened to hear of John's passing. We enjoyed John's company many times in our bus garage during inspections. He was always kind, patient, intelligent, and informative during times that would always raise apprehension levels until he arrived. He was an excellent representative of the MSP who we were always glad to see. We still miss him. My sincere condolences go out to John's family. Doug Moeckel
