Obituary

Hubert Allen Mead, aged 91, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2022. Although recently a resident of Chelsea, Michigan, Hugh spent the majority of his life living in and around the Lansing area, mostly Okemos. He was born in Dundee, Michigan and enjoyed a childhood full of family and baseball.

At the age of 20, he married the love of his life, Marjorie. The two of them built a beautiful life together, with children Wendy Mead (Richard Coy), and Matthew (Lisa) Mead. Later, he was lucky enough to have grandchildren Erin (Adam) Goff and Andrew Sienkiewicz (Jessica Pace), Nicole Coy (James Tillen), Steven (Dorota) Coy, and Brandon Coy, along with great-grandchildren Cooper, Emmett, Penelope, Connor, Henry, and Luca. His memory is also treasured by his brother Gerald (Marilyn) Mead, niece Daryl Beaton, sister-in-law Jeri Bordt, and brother-in-law Dale Bordt. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Francis Himick, and brother-in-law Robert Bordt.

Hugh was trained in radar maintenance in the United States Army, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After his military service, he enrolled in and graduated from Michigan State University. A lifelong teacher, Hugh taught Industrial Arts at Mason High School and Lansing Everett High School, and retired from Lansing Harry Hill Vocational High School as Vocational Advisor in 1988. He taught a good many things to a good many people, both in school and out. In his spare time and on school breaks, Hugh enjoyed traveling the world with his beloved wife Marj. Their adventures took them (and many in their family) to nearly every continent, but his favorite place to go was Kandersteg, Switzerland, and each summer he could be found in the picturesque Swiss Alps.

Those who knew Hugh knew him to be caring, easy to talk to, and knowledgeable in just about any topic. His stories were legendary and almost always true. Hugh was a man of conviction, a man of faith, and a man of family. His was a life well-lived.

Family will remember him with a private service on Friday November 11, 2022 at the Michigan Memorial Funeral Home with interment to follow at the Michigan Memorial Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, of Okemos, Michigan (https://faithlutheranokemos.org/) or Arbor Hospice (https://www.arborhospice.org/).

Condolences
