Obituary

Karen Lee McMahan, a devoted Registered Nurse and cherished friend, passed away on January 8, 2025, in Troy, Michigan, at the age of 66. Born on July 2, 1958, Karen lived a life filled with love, dedication, and cherished memories.

Her career as a Registered Nurse was marked by compassion and an unwavering commitment to helping others. Outside of her professional life, Karen found joy in the simple pleasures that made her heart smile. She was an avid fan of U of M Football and enjoyed the music of Bob Seger. Watching movies starring Robert Redford brought her great delight, as did relaxing evenings spent watching TV. Rehoboth Beach was a special place for Karen, where she found peace and happiness.

Karen is preceded in death by her beloved parents, George and Leila McMahan, her sister Carole Latshaw, and her brother Alan McMahan.

She leaves behind her loving son, Mark McMahan, and his partner, Laura Tupancy. Her memory will also be treasured by her siblings, Janet (Bruce) Derington, Randy (Susan) McMahan, Mike (Helen) McMahan, Cecil (Jan) McMahan, Brian (Chris) McMahan, Carl (Diane) McMahan and her cherished fur grandbaby, Mona.

Karen's warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion.

  • Rest in peace Aunt Karen. We spent too many years apart, but the times together were wonderful. Your warm smile & loving heart will always be remembered! You can finally see my mom again, and that warms my heart. Jennifer McMahan Forrester
  • Karen, I will miss you. You welcomed me into the family with opened arms when I married Randy. We had many fun family get together and holidays. Every time I hear a Bob Seger song I will be thinking of you. Rest in peace dear Sister. Susan McMahan
  • Karen leads now—- First memories of Karen come from sharing a bedroom - us three sisters. She would lead us in “Now I lay me down to sleep” then singing songs. Later we did crazy kid things like running in the snow - barefoot, riding a mattress down the stairs or the three of us sleeping in a bathtub! Finding friends came easy to her so too was making the best peanut brittle EVER. She always made sure to cover Dad and Alan in a grave blanket. She adored her nieces and nephews but no one did she cherish more than her son, Mark. She showered her place in this world with smiles and joy. Now “I lay me down to sleep…" Janet Derington
  • What a great aunt Karen was - always fun, treating me like I was an adult, spoiling her nieces and nephews... We weren't ready for this. Stephanie Brumbaugh
  • Remembering the relaxing weekend that Stephanie and I spent with her on Mackinac Island. We stayed at a beautiful B&B called the Bay View Inn. Karen will be missed for sure! Diana (McMahan) Simmons
