Obituary

Marjorie Ann Mead (Bordt), age 94, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, in Chelsea, Michigan, surrounded by her family.

Born on March 19, 1932, in Waltz, Michigan, Marj’s life was defined by faith and family. Raised on a farm near Maybee, Michigan, she learned early the values of hard work, humility, and perseverance that remained the foundation of her character throughout the years.

After high school, Marj attended Michigan State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in medical technology and a master’s degree in education. She dedicated her professional life to education as a mathematics teacher, helping generations of students develop confidence and a love of learning. Marj’s teaching career spanned many years at Mason Junior High School in Mason and Pattengill Junior High School in Lansing. She believed deeply in the value of education, while also understanding that some of life's best lessons occasionally came from breaking a rule or two.

In 1952, she married the love of her life, Hubert Allen Mead. Together they shared more than 70 years of marriage until Hugh's passing in 2022. Their time together was marked by devoted love, mutual respect, and countless adventures. Although they spent most of their lives in Okemos, Michigan, their curiosity about the world led them across the globe. During school breaks, summers, and especially throughout retirement, Marj and Hugh traveled extensively, exploring nearly every continent and creating cherished memories that enriched both their lives and the lives of those fortunate enough to join their adventures. Among the many places they visited, Kandersteg, Switzerland, held a special place in their hearts and became a favorite destination over the years.

Treasuring memories of Marj are her sister, Jerilea Bordt, her children, Wendy Mead (Richard Coy) and Matthew (Lisa) Mead; her grandchildren, Erin (Adam) Goff, Andrew Sienkiewicz (Chelsea Sigler), Nicole Coy (James Tillen), Steven (Dorota) Coy, and Brandon (Robin) Coy; and her great-grandchildren, Cooper, Emmett, Penelope, Connor, Henry, and Luca. In recent years, Marj shared her home and daily routines with a cherished feline companion, Ruby, whose quiet presence brought warmth and happiness to her days.

Marj’s influence lives on in the values and traditions she passed down, and the family she helped build. She leaves behind no greater legacy than the people who are better because they knew her. Hers was a life of purpose, grace, and lasting impact, and she will be deeply missed.

Family will remember Marj with a private service on Monday June 15, 2026 at the Michigan Memorial Funeral Home with interment to follow at the Michigan Memorial Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, of Okemos, Michigan (https://faithlutheranokemos.org/) or Arbor Hospice (https://www.arborhospice.org/), to whom Marj’s family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the compassionate care they provided..

Condolences
