Obituary

Susan Jo McCleery of Flat Rock, passed away suddenly at U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor on December 31. She was one of seven children and is survived by Jeanne Marie Downing, Diane Downing, Charles Emerson Downing (Judy), the late Harry Vincent Downing, Dave Jack Downing, Marc Thomas Downing (Cynthia), and sister-in-law Sue Lemberg Downing. She married Kenneth Carlysle McCleery at Marble Methodist Church in Milan on April 4, 1959. They had three children: son Michael Kenneth McCleery (Sherri), daughter Tamara Sue (Vito) Liparoto, and son Steven A. McCleery. She leaves behind nine grandchildren: Beth, Kristen, Jaime, Stefano, Kelly, Danielle, Nathan, Adam, Sydnye, Aubrie and Aaron; and nine great-grandchildren: Joey, Christian, Jenna, Avery, Renee, Olivia, Gabriella, Allie and MacKenzie. After raising her family Sue worked as a relocation specialist and after she retired, she worked for Werstein Tax Service from January through April 15 each year. Sue was an amazingly caring and thoughtful woman who will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She loved people and they loved her. Her joy was being with her family, especially the grand and great grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting afghans for weddings and other special occasions, quilting and scrapbooking for family members. The family has requested in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the American Heart Association.

  • We were blessed to have been neighbors for many years and I (and my family) have such wonderful memories of Mrs. McCleery. She was great friends with my mom and always made me feel like one of the family when I would go over there to hang out, tag along to hockey games, etc. She made the best fudge at Christmas and my sisters remember her delicious gum drop cookies. I remember her to always have a smile on her face and laughing. She will be greatly missed. Our prayers are with the entire family at this difficult time. Terri Martek
