Obituary

NEWSOM, Barbara M., age 88, of Williamston, April 30, 2024. Beloved wife of the late Harold Lee Newsom of 62 years, 8 months, 12 days, and 12 hours. Loving mother of James (Maxine) Newsom, Donald (Lora) Newsom, Mark Newsom, and Brett (Jody) Newsom. Dearest grandmother of Joel (Jasmine) Newsom, Joshua Newsom, Nicholas (Haley) Newsom, Danielle (Clint) Hixton, Lindsay (Jeremy) Ulsky, Sharon Newsom, Rachel Newsom, and great-grandmother of Jonah, Jadyn, Charlotte, Harper, Ollivander, and Killian. She is survived by her siblings James Briese, David (Annette) Briese, Dianne (Tom) Crossman, many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and her goddaughters Kelly and Suzie. She is preceded in death by her grandson Bradley Newsom – Thiede, parents Willa Mae and Frederick Briese, and her best friend and twin sister Betty Roberts. Barbara was the most loving wife and mother; she loved her boys but nothing brought a smile to her face like her grandchildren. They were blessed to spend so much time with her, doing her favorite things like fishing and picking berries and fruit. She also had to be around to see the babies be born during lambing season.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Condolences

  • I was extremely saddened to hear the news that my sister had passed, but thankful that it had been peaceful and that she had not suffered with any debilitating illness in her final days. Since Tom and I had moved to Florida full-time, I didn’t see my sister as much as I had when I was younger, but my love for her never diminished. She and I shared the care of my mother while she was battling cancer. Barb always jokingly said she had had Brett for me as she tried for a girl on her fourth pregnancy. Brett and I became very, very close through the years, and I was not only his godmother , but a godmother to his daughter Rachel as well. Barb is now joined with all those that loved her and that she loved and who passed before her. I’m sure family reunion going on in heaven right now. Rest in peace, dear sister. Dianne and Tom Crossman
