The family of Robert David Nelson of Westland is saddened to announce his passing on April 3, 2022, at the age of 84 years. “Bobby,” as he was known as a boy, was born in Paavola, Michigan, just outside of Houghton, to Robert and Irene Nelson in 1937. He was their eldest and the only boy, having five sisters, Marilyn, Sharon, Patty, Trina, and Carole, who preceded him in death.Bobby was a spirited young man who hitchhiked across the country, lived on his own from a young age, and had more than his fair share of scrapes. As was common in those days, Bobby was “encouraged” by the legal system to join the Armed Forces. In 1955, he joined the Navy where he sailed to Japan as an electrician on a wooden mine-sweeper. Afterward, Bob returned to Detroit where he worked first as an apprentice and then as a journeyman tool and die maker. Bob proudly plied that trade for the majority of his working life.In 1976, Bob married Betty Jo Baker, who was truly the love of his life. They were happily married for 45 years when he died. Bob would not have wanted to live without Betty and we’re sure that he is glad he passed first. Bob made sure, however, that not even death would separate them. His last and eternal loving gesture was to be cremated for future interment with Betty.Bob loved the many children in his blended family. He was the father of Robert, Jr, and Michael Nelson, and the step-father of Anthony Baker; the grandfather of Christie, Stephanie, Taylor, and Spencer, and the step-grandfather of Jason and Amberly; the great-grandfather of Bradley, Briggs, and Scarlett, and the step-great-grandfather of Bella and Kayson.If there was one thing that epitomized Bob, it was his sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh and could always be counted on for a joke, a wisecrack, or witty comeback. Even as dementia clawed away at him, Bob never lost his sense of humor.Bob’s family is holding a service on May 21, 2022, from 1p.m. to 4 p.m. at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home, (next to Michigan Memorial Park) 30895 Huron River Dr., Huron Twp., (734) 783-2646. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
