Alberta Josephine Pobanz, born on July 22, 1930, in Flat Rock, Michigan, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on March 22, 2025, in Trenton, Michigan. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Alberta, affectionately known for her love of cookies, earned the endearing moniker "Cookie Monster" among her family. Her kitchen was often filled with the delightful aroma of freshly baked cookies, which she loved to share with others. Though she often claimed she wasn’t hungry, she could never resist a good cookie. Proudly calling herself "Big Bird," she brought joy and laughter to those around her with her feisty spirit and sense of humor.
A devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers, Alberta's enthusiasm for baseball was infectious. She cherished her quiet moments at home, where she found contentment in reading books, solving crosswords, and completing jigsaw puzzles. Known for her competitive nature, she enjoyed playing games with vigor and determination.
Alberta's life was marked by her stubborn yet loving personality, and her presence was a source of strength for her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Pobanz; her parents, Jeanie and Martin Schoen; and her siblings Martin, George, Marian, Bill, Albert, John, and Alice.
She is survived by her loving children, Bonnie (Hank) Chawansky and Denise (Jerry) Cahalan; her cherished grandchildren, Holly (Dan), Melanie (Andrew), and Zachary; and her adored great-grandchildren, Ken, Chloe, Emily, Matthew, Joshua, Caleb, Hannah, Elise, and Griffin. Alberta also leaves behind her dear siblings, Gene (Thelma) Schoen, Catherine Dotson, and Edna (Bob) Lemke.
Alberta Josephine Pobanz will be remembered fondly for her love of life, her dedication to her family, and her indomitable spirit. Her memory will forever be a blessing to those who had the privilege of knowing her.
