Obituary
Richard D. Pastula, affectionately known as "Pops," passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on December 11, 1927, Pops lived a life full of adventure, laughter, and love.
A proud Army veteran, Pops was a man of unwavering patriotism. In his youthful spirit, he famously lied about his age to join the military, he also became the first World War II veteran in the Down River for Veterans community. He carried his love for his country throughout his life, always expressing admiration for Donald Trump.
Pops had a zest for life that was infectious. He was an avid fisherman and cherished the days when he would cast lines alongside Ernest Hemingway. Known for his charm, he loved to dance and flirt with women, his lively presence leaving smiles on the faces of those around him.
Though he embraced the role of a "young" 97-year-old, Pops maintained his independence, often seen taking strolls in his electric wheelchair, exploring the world with a twinkle in his eye.
He shared a deep and affectionate bond with Ann, often jokingly proposing marriage, keeping their spirits lighthearted and joyful. His sense of humor and caring nature made him a beloved figure among family and friends.
Pops is preceded in death by his loving wife, Elizabeth Pastula, whom he cherished deeply. He leaves behind a loving legacy through his daughter, Louise Pastula, who adored him endlessly. His grandchildren Joanna (Paul) and Stacy (Jamie) carry on his memory, along with his great-grandchildren Daniel III, Caleb, Ethan, Riley, and Gage. His great-great-granddaughter Freya and cherished furbabies Peanut, Buttercup, and Joy will miss his gentle touch and warm presence.
Pops's vibrant spirit, loving heart, and joyous laughter will be remembered and celebrated by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be dearly missed but forever held in the hearts of those he touched during his remarkable journey through life.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Down River for Veterans. His cremation will take place at “The Witness Crematory” located inside of Michigan Memorial Funeral Home.
