Rufus Joe Ross, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam War and longtime resident of Romulus, MI, passed away in his sleep on December 23, 2021 at the age of 91. Joe, as he was affectionately known by friends and family, was born November 22, 1930 to John and Myrtis Ross. Attending school in Pineland, Texas, Joe was the first in his family to graduate high school. After graduation Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army. As a Non-Commissioned Officer, Joe saw action in both Korea and Vietnam. The U.S. Army recognized Joe for his honorable service with multiple unit citations, Accommodation Medals and the Purple Heart. Awarded specifically for his heroic action and wounds sustained during the Vietnam War. Joe spoke often and proudly about his time in the Army and proudly displayed his veteran status at every possible occasion.Joe was united in holy matrimony for 52 years until her death to his high school sweetheart, Verlean. From this union, seven children were born. After retiring from the military in 1969, Joe moved to Columbus, Ohio for 10 years before finally settling in Romulus, Mi in 1977. This became home for Joe and his family until his passing. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Verlean, infant son Lawrence, his parents (John and Myrtis) siblings (John, Otis, Lillian, Tommy) and grandson (Anthony Seward).Joe leaves to cherish his legacy and loving memories, his children: Gail Swain (Melvin), Lillian Estes, Jo Noel (John), Howard Ross, Thomas Ross and Michael Ross. 13 grand children (Rebecca, Travis, Brandon, Michael, Sarah, Darlene, Robert, Mone’, Adrian, Chelsea, Lauren, Colin and Kristian) 4 great grandchildren (Amani, Jami, Erin, Becky’s ) and a bevy of nephews, nieces and friends.
