SMITH, John R, age 73, of Chelsea, December 02, 2015. Beloved fiancé of Priscilla Elaine Apostol. Loving surrogate father of Heidi Baize. Dearest surrogate grandfather of Alyson and Elsa. He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Vena Smith. John was a music professor of low brass and did private tutoring at Eastern Michigan University for 40 years. Upon retirement he was awarded Emeritus status. He also taught music theory to non-music majors, played with big bands, circus bands, did studio work and played with a Civil War Reenactment Band and also sang in a Barbershop Quartet. Some of the bands that John played with were Your Father’s Mustache, Red Garter, Bimbos, McKinney Cotton Pickers and Dodworth Saxhorn Band. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John Robert Smith Low Brass Music Scholarship at Eastern Michigan University
