SWIFT, John, Jr., age 87, of Southgate, December 31, 2016. Beloved husband of Lula Swift. Loving father of Phillip (Cheryl) Swift. Dearest grandfather of Leeann and Ashley. He is preceded in death by his parents John and Rena Swift. John was a good man and would help and pray with anyone. He was a mason and worked at McLouth Steel for 43 years where he won awards for his work. When he was young his father was a tobacco farmer and John had to work in the fields. He didn’t get an education until 1983 and even finished one year college. He got good grades and loved to study. He was a Deacon at a church, taught Sunday school and was on the board for First Baptist Church in Wyandotte. John and Vernell volunteered for a food pantry by purchasing all the food for 10 years. His faith was so strong. His cremation will take place at “The Witness Crematory” located inside of Michigan Memorial Funeral Home. Interment in Michigan Memorial Park.
Condolences
To the Swift family,
I grew up next door to John and Vernell and I was the childhood friend of Duane Swift. I lost my own father when I was four years old. I will always remember how kind and inclusive John was to me. When he would take Duane to play putt-putt gulf he always included me. I can remember going to Detroit Tiger games with them, I also remember when Duane and I would get into trouble he would correct us both. John was like a father to me. I always enjoyed talking with him when I would visit my mother and he was sitting on his front porch. John truly was an example of what and how a Christian man should be. Although I am sad and I send my deepest of sympathy to Vernell, we as Christians are assured of gathering again together in heaven. Love and peace to Vernell and the Swift family upon the passing her husband and their father, and mine. Paul R Heise
I worked with John for many years as a vender to J&L Steel. He always made time for me, and was a awesome man. He made the world a better place. Richard Kitchen
