Obituary
Juanita Sowards, born April 7, 1944, in Garrett, Kentucky, passed away on October 16, 2025, in Canton, Michigan, at the age of 81.
Raised amidst the natural beauty of Kentucky, Juanita developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors. She found joy and solace in her garden, where she lovingly tended to her plants, with a particular fondness for red geraniums. Each year, she dedicated herself to planting hundreds of these vibrant flowers, creating a sanctuary of color and life around her.
Juanita was preceded in death by her beloved son, Tim Mizell; her first husband, Ray Mizell; her second husband, James Sowards; and her siblings, Raben Pratt and Merilea Pratt.
She is survived by her cherished daughter, Andrea Lumsden, and her son-in-law, John. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Ainsley Lumsden (Christian Parker), Caitlynn McCormick (Matt), Sandra Beekel (Jerry), Tim Mizell, and Aaron Mizell (Carmen). Her great-grandchildren, Macilynn McCormick, Everly McCormick, Mason McCormick, Preston Beekel, Jacob Beekel, and Avery Beekel, will carry forward the light and love she shared with them.
Juanita also leaves behind her sisters, Carnetta "Tookie" Combs, Priscilla Prater, and Zeda Martin, who will forever hold her memory dear.
Her family and friends remember Juanita as a kind-hearted soul whose door was always open and whose garden was a testament to her nurturing spirit. In her garden, she found peace and fulfillment, and in her family, she found her greatest joy.
