Obituary

Leo Walter Smith, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on February 24, 2025, in Wyandotte, at the age of 80. Born on November 13, 1944, in Detroit, Leo lived a life devoted to his family, work, and community.

Leo dedicated over 30 years of service to Rouge Steel/Ford before retiring, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment. He also served as a finance officer for American Legion Post 472, where he was a longtime member and an integral part of the community. Outside of his professional life, Leo enjoyed coaching his sons in baseball, sharing his love for the sport with the next generation.

In his leisure time, Leo found joy in hunting, fishing, and bowling, pursuits that allowed him to connect with nature and friends alike.

Leo is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Smith; parents, Dorothy and Henry Matthison; and sister, Mary.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Eileen Mae Smith; his loving children, Deborah Smith, Derek (Melissa) Smith, and Jeanette (James Killian) Smith. Leo also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Shawn (Tabitha) Smith and Storm (Jordan) Smith, as well as his adored great-grandchildren, Hailee Smith, Aiden Smith, Isaiah Smith, and Odessa Smith. His brother, Rahn (Robin) Matthison, continues to hold dear the memories they shared together.

In addition to his immediate family, Leo will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, along with a wide circle of friends and fellow members of the Legion Post 472 community who were touched by his kindness and generosity.

Leo's legacy of love, dedication, and strength will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.
