Obituary

(Poe) Smith, Margaret J., age 74, of Southgate, MI crossed over and took her first steps in Heaven on May 19, 2019. Margaret, known as Nellie to her family, was born September 12, 1944 in West Virginia, the daughter of a coal miner. Her family would eventually find their way to River Rouge, Michigan where she would finish her schooling at River Rouge High School and meet the Love of her Life Hoyt E. Smith. Hoyt fell for the beautiful, young redhead and soon afterwards the two married. Through their Love, Margaret would have three sons, Hoyt “Randy” (Tracy) Smith, Brian (Margaret) Smith, and Craig (Tracy) Smith in Southgate, MI. She was an incredible Mother and homemaker, always with a spotless home, full-table southern cooked meals, and the ability to still find time to play with her boys and the neighborhood kids in the backyard. The neighborhood kids flocked to her backyard because of the fun and comfort Margaret would provide, usually feeding the whole group lunches, or snacks and always satiating their thirst for Kool Aid. Strong of will, Margaret continued life’s journey after the great loss of her beloved husband Hoyt in 1984. The blessings of grandchildren would eventually come, focusing her attention on being a loving grandmother to Quintin, then Reed, Cade and Owen.Later in life, Margaret or “Poe” as they called her would become somewhat of a celebrity at Rivergate Terrace, always willing to give a smile and when able, a compliment. Everyone loved her big personality to the extent that she was voted Queen for a year which made her so very happy. Even in her most trying moments Margaret never stopped being a Mother, always whispering “I Love You”, making sure our hair was in place with a firm motherly pat, or handing out hugs in her final months.Margaret “Nellie” Smith (Poe) is preceded in death and now is in celebration with her musically talented father Russell, her loving mother Laura Mae, her dearest beloved husband Hoyt E. Smith, fun loving mischievous sister and brothers, Joann MacSuga, Eddie “Russ” Brown, Hoy Allen Brown, and wonderful nephew Robert MacSuga. They are dancing, singing, laughing and healthy together in all the glory of Heaven.
