Obituary

Phillip Serwick returned to Jesus on May 17th, 2023 surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. He was born at his family’s home in Detroit as Phillip Szewczyk on the 14th of November in 1935 (his family later changed their name to Serwick).  Those close to him affectionately referred to him as “Butchie.” Phillip is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Helen Serwick, sister Karen Shade, and brother-in-law Wilfred McConkey.  He is survived by the love of his life, Vicki Serwick and their five children Danny Serwick (Celeste), Beth Bauer (Matt), Julie Martin (Tom), Kelly VanSkiver (Jeff), and Mary Heymoss (Scott), as well as 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Janet McConkey and Marcia Costa. Phil attended Eastern High School and then served as an infantry soldier in the 1st Cavalry Division in Korea. After serving his country, he attended Wayne State University and Detroit College of Law. Following a long and rewarding career, he retired from the U.S. Army Tank - Automotive & Armaments Command. After his retirement he settled in Panama City, FL where he enjoyed sitting on his deck watching the sunset each night. Phil made friends wherever he went and will be deeply missed by his family as well as everyone who knew and loved him.

Condolences

  • Phil I hate to see you go. I enjoyed your company over the years. I remember sitting in the pool chatting with you while you were reading books and baking in the Florida sun. Condolences to all of the friends and family. Kevin Pemberton
  • I served in the first cav in cold war korea. Phillip and i became friends there in 1959. It was a rough time and we had to endure the hardships of rigorous combat training and manuvers. He was a good friend and I was able to reconnect with him with the help of his granddaughter on facebook a few years ago. May God grant mercy and grace to his grieving family in this their hour of need. Joseph Morris
