SMITH, Walter J., age 89, of Southgate, passed away December 13, 2021. Walter was born in 1932 and raised in Ecorse, Michigan. Walter worked at Great Lakes Steel before moving to River Rouge where he joined the River Rouge Police Department. After 30 years of service, Walter retired as Deputy Police chief. Through his career and after Walter worked construction doing roofing, siding and house hold projects before moving to Flat Rock, where he designed and built his retirement home with help from his friends. Walter later moved to Riverview before residing in Southgate. Preceded in death his wife of 50 years Mary “Grace” (Shomsky) Smith, daughter Patricia Trent and grandsons Mark Smith and Bradley Trent. Loving companion of Beverly Vroman. Loving father of his surviving children Claudia Smith, Joseph (Blanca) Smith, Gail (Darrell Harned) Smith and Renee (Mark) Kelley. Proud grandfather of 4, great-grandfather of 3 and surrogate great-grandfather of Emma Morse.
