Obituary

Donald (Don) James Treder, 85 of Canton, MI, formerly, Romulus, MI and Plymouth, MI died peacefully on October 14, 2020, in Brooklyn, MI on Lake Columbia.Don was born on June 8, 1935 to Anthony (Tony) and Leona (Prill) Treder in Romulus, MI. The oldest of four children, he grew up on the family farm and harvested a strong work ethic while graduating from Romulus High School in 1953 and later from the University of Michigan in 1958 with a degree in Civil Engineering and Land Surveying. He also served a short stint in the Air Force. In 1960, Don married the love of his life, Mary Lee (Kopas) and together they built a wonderful life in Romulus with their four children. Don was employed by the Michigan State Highway Department after graduating from UofM and went onto work for Cook Construction and later B & V Construction where he served as VP of engineering. Don found time to have a part-time career as a land surveyor in the Southeast Michigan. In retirement, Don and his son formed a construction company, DJT Development, which gave Don a much beloved second career building homes. As a dedicated U of M fan, Don spent many Fall Saturdays tailgating and rooting on his beloved Wolverines as a season ticket holder for over 40 years!Don was a long-time member of St Aloysius Church and a member of the Ushers’ Club developing programs at the Church. He also found time to be an active member of the Romulus Jaycees, participated in softball and bowling leagues and honed his skills on the golf course. He enjoyed northern Michigan winters, downhill skiing and snowmobiling. With Don’s construction background, he was appointed to multiple terms for the Romulus Planning Commission and later in life joined Romulus Rotary Club and served as President. Don was an amazing husband and father and was always a constant advisor and mentor for his children and later grandchildren. He was a great source of inspiration through his life, but even more so after Don lost his left arm to cancer. Nothing stopped him, three weeks after the surgery Don was downhill skiing and winning matches on the golf course. He was active right up until his heart attack. Throughout his life, Don and Mary Lee loved to travel throughout the United States and aboard, on golf trips with friends, up to Gaylord to their cottage and on trips with the Michigan Alumni Association. Don loved to be active and on the go. His greatest joys were spending time with his family on his pontoon boat on Otsego Lake in Gaylord and later on Lake Columbia in Brooklyn, MI. Some of his treasured gifts are in the form of stained-glass lamps which he crafted for his children. Retirement allowed Don & Mary Lee to winter in New Smyrna Beach for over 20 years, making new friends and enjoying the sunshine.Don is preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, Anthony (Tony) and Frances (Szymanski) Kopas, sister, Jeanette Carter, brother-in-law, Albert Glinski, sister-in-law, Mary Jo Kopas, nephew, Chris Glinski and niece, Kathy Glinski. Surviving are his loving wife, Mary Lee, children: Gayle (Bill) Perry, Don (Lori) Treder, Jeff (Sarah) Treder and Jill Penna. Grandchildren: Clay (Courtney), Zak and Jake Treder, Alex and Madison Perry, Grant, Adam, Nolan and Evan Treder, Emily and Kyle Penna.
