Obituary

Van Hart, Steven R., age 68, of Flat Rock, passed away on August 12, 2024 after a short, but aggressive fight with thyroid cancer. Steven was a beloved husband, loving father and proud “Papaw.” Steven graduated from Carmel High School in 1974. He dedicated 40 years to Marathon Petroleum and retired in 2014.

Steve met his sweetheart, Marie, in 1976 and married on July 8th, 1978. They celebrated 46 years of marriage this July. Steve and Marie have two sons; Andy Van Hart and Tony (Abby) Van Hart. Two of Steve’s greatest joys were his grandchildren, Ethan and Mollie. He is survived by his sisters Karen(Rusty) Smith and Sue Kellough. He is preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Laura Van Hart.

He belonged to the Elks and the Sons of the American Legion. When Andy and Tony were young, Steve was an assistant Boy Scout Leader, Soccer Commissioner, and served on the board of directors for the Carmel Dads Club in Carmel, Indiana. He and Marie loved to travel. Along with spending half of the year in Clearwater, Florida, these snowbirds enjoyed cross-country trips in their Winnebago, epic sea adventures during their cruise excursions and all the wind their hair could handle on their many Harley rides. Steve was the president of the Lake Placid Park neighborhood association for their home in Florida. He enjoyed Harleys, Corvettes, and all things John Deere, having a very large collection of their memorabilia and teaching Ethan to recite “green is good, red is bad”.

Steve was such a good soul. He is fiercely loved and missed by many. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Karmanos Cancer Institute.  His cremation will take place at “The Witness Crematory” located inside of Michigan Memorial Funeral Home.
