Obituary

Karen Sue Wagel, a vivacious soul who turned every moment into a cherished memory, was born on November 13, 1942, in the bustling city of Detroit, Michigan. She gracefully left this world on March 30, 2025, at the age of 82, in Southgate, Michigan.

Karen lived her life with a zest that could brighten even the dreariest of days. As a Homemaker, she mastered the art of turning a house into a home filled with laughter and love. Her greatest joy was spending time Gigi’s Lakehouse AKA “The Shack”. Whether her feet were in the sand, or she was traveling to new destinations, Karen embraced every adventure with enthusiasm and humor.

Her Thursday night dinners with family and friends were legendary, known as much for the excellent company as for Karen's infectious wit. An involved Gigi, she was the biggest cheerleader for her family, always ready with a Drumstick in hand to share her special brand of encouragement.

Karen is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 34 years, Donald E. Wagel. She is survived by her children, James Wagel, Doug AKA Gary (Pat) Wagel, and Amy (Brian W.) Wagel, who carry forward her legacy of love and laughter. Her grandchildren—Joe, Ryan (Mary), Cody (Hannah), Kyle (Megan), Kristin (Andrew), and Jordan (Lilly)—will forever cherish the games of cards and the warmth of her heart. Her great-grandchildren, Caleb, Wyatt, Colton, Madilyn, Vivian, and the soon-to-arrive Baby Proctor, will surely hear tales of their extraordinary Gigi. And let’s not forget her dearest furry friend, Havana, who will miss her dearly.

Karen’s memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 PM. Her cremation will take place at "The Witness Crematory," located inside Michigan Memorial Funeral Home, with inurnment to take place in Michigan Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, Karen would have loved for contributions to be made to the Michigan Humane Society or the American Cancer Society, causes close to her heart.

Karen Sue Wagel lived her life like a well-told joke—full of humor, unexpected joys, and always with perfect timing. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and memories that will keep her spirit alive in the hearts of all who knew her.
